2010 MY 90 XS. 2nd year service done at beginning of March - Full B service + transmission oil changes. Have covered about 1000 miles since with no apparent change in performance or fuel consumption - have an ongoing spreadsheet to check on this. On switching off I get the 5 EGR Chukka cleaning cycles as normal. However, I've noticed I get the same Chukka sound , just once, when I change down gear or on the overrun, not always but sometimes. I'm sure it didn't do this pre-service. There is No engine light and the Scanguage that I refitted after the service doesn't show any DTC codes. If I disconnect the EGR, no noise and just the engine light.
Is this normal, the EGR making this noise whilst driving and I've just become aware of it? LANDYWATCH Neighbourhood Watch for Land Rover Owners http://www.landywatch.co.uk/smf2/index.php |

Cannot say that I have noticed this on either the 2008 or on the 2011 Puma. If the "chuka" noise denotes self cleaning I suppose it is not causing any harm, just cleaning more often. It will be interesting to read the feedback from some of the techno guys later on. 1982 88" 2.25 diesel

Hi Zagato,
I too remember that post, but cannot find it now. Went for a long run today with EGR disconnected - No noise. Reconnected EGR and cleared DTC's logged by Scanguage. Nosise back - on overrun only, not whilst accelerating and not frequently and seems to be in 1st, 2nd or 3rd gear on overrun. Has there been a recent ECU upgrade sometime between March 2011 and March 2012, that might have been applied during the recent service? As stated previously engine runs well, as it did before the service, and fuel consumption remains unchanged. The EGR on my 2008 Defender also started working during normal driving. No other symptoms other than the chukka noise you mentioned. When I took it in for a service they replaced it with a modified version, identifiable by a small vent pipe. It also seems to be quieter.
