Hi,
Just when I was really enjoying the new Defender it lets me down. Done less than 200 miles when it won't start and the alarm / horn are going off and there's nothing I can do to turn if off. Call LR Assistance who are out in 15 minutes. Within 5 mins he has found the problem - the negative connection / bracket on the battery lead has snapped. Apparently this was the first 2.2 he had been to and had never seen this problem before. With a few bits from his car he had the fixed enough to get me home. When you look at the bracket it has bound to happen there is just not enough metal on the bracket and if its over tightened it will snap - this must have happened at the factory. New lead now on order with the dealer. |

Check your turbo hose too... the next chapter in Defender history has begun Tell someone you love them today because life is short.

it happened to me (04/2010 model), and I was told that it "maybe the chap who fitted the winch did it", but I know at least two other cases here with some guys (no electrical extras fitted) that happened the same! the negative cable was replaced under warranty...and the neg winch cable is now fixed to the chassis... Slightly related...
When my sons and I were building battery go-carts a few years ago we realised that there were MASSIVE differences in battery clamp quality depending on suppliers (all from eBay). Some of them are clearly made from the sh*ttiest pig-metal possible. I wonder if anyone QCs the ones on the new Defenders Tell someone you love them today because life is short. But shout it at them in German because life is also terrifying and confusing... |

FYI / reference
I noticed the negative clamp coming loose on mine, fastened it and while fastening it started sliding up the conical battery terminal again. Made 3 "indentions" in the lead with a flat screwdriver so the top of the terminal expands a bit and the clamp can not slide up. The reason for this sliding is that the original clamps are based on a conical nut squeezing the 2 half conical parts of the clamp legs together. (go look, hard to explain and no pics available) instead of a bolt pulling the clamp legs together as the classic type. When you tighten the nut the halves are not pressed together fast enough and the pressure releases by sliding the clamp up; even when holding the clamp down it was iffy to get it right. just my 2cents |

Don't see what was wrong with the old clamps
They were reliable and gave plenty of possibilities to add + cables ad infinitum Tell someone you love them today because life is short. But shout it at them in German because life is also terrifying and confusing... |
