I think it the clunking is caused by the shoes in the brake drum grabbing when going slow/slowing down. Theory being its not something you may notice traveling at speed as the drum wont have time to bind on the shoes. Slower speeds you will feel the grabbing and more so prior to a complete stop.

Your issue 2 I guess is connected to issue 1 as the antistall part of the ecu mught be able to detect a cough/struggle in the engine caused by the binding in the brake drum?

Just my thoughts. 1999 Defender TD5 110

Many thanks! I've give up trying to get mine fixed for now due to a botched job (X3) at the local dealer. In the process of convincing myself it isn't important... Tell someone you love them today because life is short.
But shout it at them in German because life is also terrifying and confusing...

To get the handbrake adjustment correct or so it was'nt binding took me a while. Spin the drum check for noise, adjust etc then try with the handbrake on etc and keep adjusting. 1999 Defender TD5 110

Hmm, have noticed this on mine, but noise is intermittent
I'll come to a stop and disengage the gear, then when I release the clutch theres a soft clunk in keeping with the idle speed. If I engage the clutch the noise goes away and engaging the handbrake does nothing, took it to the dealers and they could not hear the noise Sad
