Prop UJ is favourite ... or possibly a prop refitted at the wrong position so now out of 'true'?? Guns and Landrovers .... anything else is irrelevant.

Prop shaft uj's are certainly one possible cause. During normal driving there are no driveline clunks 1999 Defender TD5 110

Could be as simple as a loose prop - mine did exactly the same when I forgot to tighten the bolts properly...

Got under the car today and re-greased the prop shafts. While under there I noticed the rear prop shaft at the drum end was held on by 2 nuts, the other two, one had gone missing and the other was almost off.
So tightened up the remaing nut and made sure the other two were tight. Just missing one nut now. Took the car for a spin and noticed a slight clunk/shunting when reversing and some when coming to a stop. This is not as bad as last night. I will replace the missing nut and check the remainining. 1999 Defender TD5 110 Regards John M0VAZ Econet Station 48 no clock |

Nuts replaced and the rest nipped up.
Thought I had cured it.. It turns out I haven't ![]() Now it seems worse than it was before. Doesn't matter if I am in neutral and coasting or clutch and coasting, its when the car comes to a stop. I popped into to see a garage that does landy's and they are landy nuts themselves and he had a look and a drive and the suggestion was, the clutch may not be releasing fully, also mentioned the biting point for the clutch was lower than what it should be, then he had a look at the clutch fluid and felt like it was a bit thin. Suggested a bleed through of the clutch. So that's worth a try( a no cost one to me) Other than trying the clutch bleed my next move is to drop a prop shaft in turn and take the car for a spin and see if it goes away More thoughts people? 1999 Defender TD5 110 Regards John M0VAZ Econet Station 48 no clock |

Prop UJs are on my list and was one of my first thoughts. When I get my side of the drive back I will will drop a prop and give the car a spin. 1999 Defender TD5 110

Right update. Removed the front prop and took the car for a spin and no clunks.
Put the front back and on and took it for a spin - clunk/shunt under braking. Removed the rear and took it for a spin - no clunks. There is some clunking but more like from the transfer case, certainly not the same sort of clunking/shunting I had before, I put this down to no having a rear prop to absorb some of the T/C play ? I did notice while under the car (with both props on) that when rocking the car forward and backward there was some clunking coming from the handbrake drum. I'm confused.! Is it the rear prop? Is it a combo of the rear prop and handbrake drum..? or other? 1999 Defender TD5 110 Regards John M0VAZ Econet Station 48 no clock |

Well, I think I have cured the clunking noise.
While under the car I noted the handbrake drum was sticking as I spun it around and then it would free off. So I adjusted the handbrake so there was no sticking and then adjusted the brake back up and then it started sticking. Removed the rear prop and drum and had a look at the adjusters and they were covered in crap. So cleaned them up and re-covered with copperslip and re-assembled all parts. Re-adjusted the brakes and took the car for a spin - all OK. Drove to work and no clunks. So fingers crossed its sorted. 1999 Defender TD5 110 Regards John M0VAZ Econet Station 48 no clock |

Sorry, got here too late - would have said handbrake drum to start with (call me a smart-a*se
![]() Several members (including me) have the same trouble... except mine won't stop even after adjustment ![]() I can trigger mine by "flinging" the gearstick from second into neutral when coasting, so it is somehow quite sensitive to the rest of the drivetrain, e.g. gearbox/clutch state. Question - did yours make changing gear feel a bit odd? I get the impression it feeds back up the gearstick too ![]() But shout it at them in German because life is also terrifying and confusing... |

Bear in mind that Excossacks' truck is a TD5 rather than a Puma, so his problem would have just been a normal tolerance issue. Darren

Gear changing does feel smoother, less clunkier. As mentioned mine is a TD5. 1999 Defender TD5 110 Regards John M0VAZ Econet Station 48 no clock |

On my PUMA, I have noticed:
1. a slight clink/click when coasting to a stop (intermittant, probably temperature related) - i too think this is handbrake-related. 2. also when coasting to a stop, the rev-counter sometimes picks-up slightly from tickover speed - I assumed this was something to do with the anti-stall getting it's knickers in a twist. Do my thoughts sound correct? I'm not overly concerned at the moment, but I do coast less than I did in my TD5 because of these symptoms...
