Wales 2009 Defender 110 Puma 2.4 XS DCPU Tonga Green
Upgraded clutch....... Anyone?
Good evening gents,

Basically all was well until I spoke to Gary..... who sent me a new map through for the Defender and WOW..... I never knew 2.5 tons could accelerate soo fast. But then once I hit 5th gear and cruising I decided to see how well it goes from cruising at 2,000 rpm without dropping a gear....... at about 2,500 the clutch slips Rolling Eyes

I have now covered 31K miles and about 7-10K of that is off road/ towing so hasn't come as a huge surprise.

I still have 3 months warranty so contemplating taking it to LR and saying 'Give me a new one'.... But how do I demonstrate it slipping without the re-map, lol...... Also mine is a 09 (built about April 09) does it have the 'better' clutch, or is it one of the earlier, less reliable ones?

I also don't trust the dealers out here...... It went in for an ABS modulator- it took 2 weeks without a curtosy car and I then had to spend 2 hours tightening everything up, and replacing missing screws!!

Personally I would rather fit an upgraded unit ...... at least that way I know it is a good job and I will do g-box and t-box oil at the same time.

.......... Soooooo...... Anyone know of a company who make one????

Yes, de-tuning the truck would also be an answer but I am loving the extra power Cool, and making the truck more reliable is the name of the game!!

Could Gary not de-tune it for you on a temp basis and then after have it re-applied? Thumbs Up Perhaps it's not that simple though

I am running the tunes from the ATRIC so can put the original map back on.... but it still doesn't sort the fact that the clutch is slipping/ nearly dead........ I don't want to take it to LR and they just put the same grade clutch in as it will then just last another 20-30K if I am lucky (Currently I am doing more driving off-road than on road!!).

I would much rather put an upgraded unit in and then I won't even have to worry about it Thumbs Up

P.S...... Did you get the D44 transmission guard on?.... I keep meaning to take a couple of pictures and do a 'Guide' to make things easier.

Mine is a March/April 2009 DC as well. Mine had the old clutch and it has been replaced under warranty.

Get it changed and look for your HD version.

What about just making sure they put the later clutch in or order one yourself if you can do it. Agree would be useful to know about a HD clutch though Thumbs Up The later clutch has a different part no. Don't ask me what it is Whistle

Hmmmm, so I might have the older Censored clutch..... How can I tell without taking the box off?......... Did they change at a certain VIN number and was it recorded?

I am back in the UK for a week soon, so could book it in for then....... or I need to finish of my Suzuki landie project to get myself around, lol.

They are visually different apparently (don't ask me!) some folk with 2010 models said they had the old type clutch but i think they started to come in 09 Never seen anyone mention VIN numbers Sad but the part number has been mentioned before!

Why not just get a warranty one then when that finally fails get an uprated one then. Can't see the point of spending your own money when you don't need to.

Good old Land Rover...... I guess it was a case of whatever was sitting on the factory floor at the time, lol.

I think I will do a little more research and if nothing much comes up I will just book her in and it will give me more time to find a HD version.

Mike, the problem I have here is the dealers...... if you think ones in the UK are bad you will be mortified by the standard out here! When she went in for the ABS modulator there was 1 fault (I even told them what it was and gave them the tech bulletin). It came back with 3 new electrical faults (Earth faults) and the modulator was just sitting in the bracket. I would rather not let them do the work so would prefer to go for an alternate (much better product) and do it myself.

New Question...... Anyone got a full 'Stig' suit and helmet for when I am riding my Landie (once back in one piece)?

I am confused with this as someone last month posted the chassis number that the new clutch started on. I took delivery on mine in March 09 and it should according to its chassis number have the new sort fitted.

Any thoughts?

I saw that as well and my vin was after the date that the new clutch was supposed to be fitted.

There were lots on marks on other components as well that were dated April 2009, so my guess is the build started earlier in 2009, not sure when the vin is allocated, and one of the first items in the line was the clutch which happened to be the old type.

As the Double Cabs are not as common as other types I just put it down to the length of time taken to build the vehicle - maybe a delay somewhere ?

I suppose the vin could be allocated well before the vehicle is finished but it could very well have components that were used on vehicles before that vin.

We have this very situation on SWHMBO's new Porsche, x/y/z are done because the chassis number is this - that is not the case because the build was started before the start of the mods and finished afterwards.

When ever I see this will only affect vehicles after a certain vin I take it with a piece of salt, all manufacturers use up components that are on the shelf provided they are not life threatening.

might be worth a call to Ashcroft transmissions, they have a td5 HD clutch - maybe they are working on a HD tdci clutch ?

A heavy duty clutch for a 90 is normally one from a 130 2015 2.2 tdci hardtop xs
3.2 conversion DONE 238bhp and 707nm torque and thats just the start ;-P

So far there is not a HD clutch for the Puma-MT82 combo. If slipping is the issue then you need mainly to get a stronger cover plate or to fit a ceramic-made friction plate. Any of those would make your driving quite unfriendly. If the problem is rattling or friction plate knackering, then you can fit, well a ceramic plate or some organic aftermarket plates with a stronger hub. In both cases the gearbox will clatter in idle speed. According to Ashcroft no damage is exerted to the tranny.

So I guess it is up to a engineer to design a better system for the Puma.

There is however a myth: I was told by a member of this forum that LR developed a sort of special kit to add (apparently) to the clutch system. It would be good somebody located in the UK could find this out. The other source is sopposed to be IRB, aka. porny and adafish. Good luck if you can get an answer from them. Rakeway could also know something about it, but same as the latter, no answer whatsoever.
