Scotland 2005 Defender 110 Td5 DCPU Stornoway Grey
my 2005 110 double cab
I came across this forum for 2 reasons: 1) I was looking for a solution to mount the spare wheel on the back of the double cab pickup and 2) I am / was considering selling.

So hello to all and please help supply me with many reasons why there is absolutely no need to sell my beloved 110!

I'd love a reason to replace the 110 with a 90 as i no longer need the size / space in the 110....

On the spare wheel carrier i've found a few relevant threads and the best solution appears to be the Sonic carrier - although i can't actually find it on the web anywhere. Found a link on ebay suggesting it was �600 or more which if it works well may be worth it, but substantially more than any others i've found.

V nice Thumbs Up love the rear bed cover. I've got the Sonic carrier on the dcpu great piece of kit try Allisport or pm sonic3d on here for one?

I've also seen Mantec ones fitted but you'll need to modify the tailgate to open to the side. Formerly mao99999

Very nice - even the same colour as mine.

I went for the exmoor trim bed cover as i can remove it & switch back to the "wendy house" in about 10 mins if I need to.

For the spare wheel carrier - go for the Sonic / Allisport one - it was the very first mod I did to my 110DC and it is fantastic - completely indestructible, yet easy to use / open. Puts all the weight on the cross member, with no mods to the tub or tailgate

I use my 110DC as my daily runabout - school run, zipping about the place etc. Would not be without it. Starts first time, every time, and I can fix most things that go wrong myself (well, almost most things...)

Would not change for a 90 - why do I want to restrict my options? With a 110DC you ALWAYS have the flexibility. 2001 TD5 110 DCPU in Bonatti Grey

thanks for the replies. As i suspected would happen you are only fueling my desire to keep ahold of it Smile

I love the pickup cover - its an N&J Aluminium one, which, while a little pricey, definitely does the job. My intention is / was to fit 2 bike racks across the way. I have the bars made which will fit almost like roof rails to the cover.

the 110 was my daily runaround too, however, for now its been replaced with a more family friendly estate car on the promise that i'd sell this. At least thats what i told the Mrs Wink

As for the 90 / 110 argument - the 110 replaced a 90 and its definitely the more practicle beast, but i just can't stop loving the idea of a 90. Only downside so far to the 110 is the enormous turning circle - this has led to some comedy kerb mounting moments!

You'll probably find you can adjust the steering stops a loooooong way in from where they were from the factory.

I have a 2009 DC and it is an excellent vehicle only downside, as you said, is the turning circle of the Titanic Laughing

On the Exmoor challenge a couple of weeks ago we ended up winching round corners (no traction in the thick ****), 90's had no problem - and my steering stops are adjusted.

Just got a TD5 90, to run alongside the 110 DC, as my main offroad vehicle. It is the first TD5 I have driven and I must say that I really enjoy driving it, only downside no 6th gear but it will do very little long cruising work.

I have driven a few 90 Pumas and they have been way to choppy for me, the TD5 90 is far better on the road, probably the suspension is shot Laughing

Have a look in my gallery and you will see pictures of the Sonic carrier fitted to a DC.

Now I like 110s, but coming from a Hiace Van to a 90 I cant say I miss the space as much as I thought I would - I just tend to be more ruthless with what I need to carry. If I need more load space for whatever reason I just hitch on the trailer Wink
But, there's only 3 in our family and no dog - factor these in and I guess a 110 would be better. 2005 TD5 90 Hard Top

I don't have a problem with the turning circle, you just drive accordingly Confused The only difference for me is one manoeuvre more if parking in a supermarket, no biggee! Thumbs Up

On road nor do I, in a supermarket car park I just abandon it where it stops Rolling with laughter

Off road it is an absolute pain in the ****, especially when you can't do a 20 point turn because you have do forward or rearward drive due to no traction. Downhill tight 180 degree hairpins in very low traction situations are interesting to say the least Thumbs Up Even more annoying is when, after having to winch the front round to resolve the situation, a 90 nips round the same turn without issue as it could do the turn in one.

i don't really have a problem with the turning circle - its part of its charm for me now!

i had a 90 200tdi before the TD5 and of course the TD5 is streets ahead. The previous owner had the TD5 remapped, i'm don't know exactly what was done, but compared with other TD5s i've driven i certainly notice the difference, makes it extremely driveable on the road.

I must admit its not been offroad much while i've owned it Sad something l'd like to change! I'm living in the northeast of england right now, close to Durham so if anyone can suggest any routes / meets nearby in the near future i'd love to get involved...

Bob thanks for pointing me in the direction of the pics of the sonic wheel carrier. it does look the business, but given i'm supposed to be selling the landy (as far as the mrs is concerned) i don't think a new wheel carrier would go unnoticed Wink Right now when carrying any load i need to leave the spare behind, which is far from ideal... I'm also loving the wheels on your DC - WANT WANT WANT
