Yes Nene have an interesting history, I believe the company is in his wife's name due to the shenanigans of his previous company (Phew nothing libelous their )

The full story? well the transfer box kept jumping out of low range the first time it went off road (fixed under warranty), the passenger door has a hole near the front lower hinge (good for additional drainage) the drivers door has tell tale signs in the same place. Yeah I know I should have spotted it, known weak spot Strangely the rest of the doors are solid (metal not corrosion) so I guess I took that as a good sign and didn't check the inner face the Steering pump started leaking but it looked fine when I inspected it, coolant leak from the hose feeding ithe injectors, where the hose was not fixed in its clip and had rubbed against the engine mounting, the fuel tank overflow had a huge split in it, and one of the front ABS sensors was dodgy, the headlamps were illegal due to aftermarket HID bulbs being fitted in the standard refelectors but curiously it came with a brand new MOT Surely all this should have been picked up when Nene serviced it before collection? other than that I like it and having spent enough of my hard earned putting it all right, its going to be around a while. Probably could have brought your 90 Mike with the money I've spent on this one!
Oh and if any of you boys and girls want a really good rust treatment try POR15 for those of you that may not have heard of it. Its excellent - doors don't rist any more get it from www.frost.co.uk |

We've just done some work on a 90, it's a silver td5 from outside and in, mint too... but a 300 tdi lump, on closer inspection, the bulkhead is red painted silver and the chassis seems to be twisted.....the guy gave a lot of money from a well known supplier (who did a stretch for ringing land rovers in the 90's). I reckon they have something to do with what keeps partymonkey so busy

Hm, not good. I've been with some ex Dakar guys for the past few days and as one they said "defenders are great fun but for a serious, reliable vehicle, look elsewhere". Having had a number of defenders and being a landrover fan, I'm afraid I have to agree with them.

However hard I try I just can't get enthusiastic about Jap stuff, had a Honda and Nissan both gave trouble and I lost a lot of money on both - I could have bought two LR exhaust systems for what I paid for a Honda back box Also depreciation was akin to driving them off a cliff
I did look at Land Cruisers (ugly, less room, boring!) and Nissan Patrols but heard they had engine probs so I was VERY happy to justify my decision for a Defender. Excitement versus peace of mind for reliability, I don't rely on mine so no problem and Jap stuff isn't that reliable they have their problems. Plenty of LR hard working examples out their that have had no problems, 250,000 miles hard towing over 3 years with two new gearboxes - not bad really - never broken down on him Last edited by Zagato on 23rd Mar 2012 8:30am. My dad has a Land Cruiser Amazon. Nice truck but the brakes went wrong on it last year.
The part along was nearly £2000 then nearly another £1000 on labour. Think what £3000 would get you on a defender. Admitably that's the only thing that has ever gone wrong with any of the ones he has had, but like mentioned above, if they do go wrong brace yourself... Having said that, an Amazon has to be compared with a FFRR and I bet they are expensive to fix and not as reliable... They were one of the first companies I found on the internet when looking for a new defender and was quite taken with their website. To me they came across as enthusiatic specialists with good morals and values, unfortuneatly some of the comments about them on various forums suggested differently. "Once bitten, twice shy for me" for me as I got ripped off once by a so called "specialist" when purchasing my camper which I'm still putting right now. From personnal experience, and that of the keepers, stalkers, farmers and shepherds I know.
Jap stuff is better for light work and off tarmac work. Landrover is better for very hard work and off any-sort-of-road work. My old man says that if you need a defender, there is nothing better, and if you don't there is nothing worse! Good things come to the wild and free |
