I don't understand why they used this box - ZF are excellent and have been used in Land Rover products for at least 15 years with very few issues. They have a Technical Helpline which works, they have taken the time to put together technical information on TOPIx, yet Land Rover decided to ignore it, perhaps because they knew the Defender was being binned in its present form?

Sigh - I'd just got used to the idea that I was imagining my MT82 problems
I fully intend to get an automatic from Ashcroft (any idea where these come from?) at some time in the future, so the sooner ours breaks completely, the sooner the wife has to agree Tell someone you love them today because life is short. But shout it at them in German because life is also terrifying and confusing... |

Nothing surprising at all. Getrag is Ford Company and Cologne is one of the factories worldwide where they put together the MT82. Cant remember how many, bit think it were something like 8 to 10 factories worldwide assembling the Transit/Mustang boxes. Never forget: cars have owner, Landrover have field service personnel. |

Should call the transfer box the transit box Somebody will make a bespoke spline for the Defender hopefully. I think it must take quite a hammering in the Defender off road let alone slamming it into gear in the first place. I wonder how much damage can be done to the spline if the operator isn't careful whilst engaging the gears. Surprising how many people bang things into gear with no mechanical sympathy at all, but it does need positive force, there is a carefully described action for this in the handbook
On the school run I regularly see another parent riding her clutch on a steep hill whilst we wait for the lights to change She must get through a clutch every month |

Only "surprising" because so much fuss was made about the Chinese-built MT82s failing in Mustangs - as a typical paranoid Defender owner, I originally assumed they were all built there... Seems some of us have issues with the gearbox, but that's by no mean a rule.
The gearbox on my '09 Defender works like a charm, nothing to complain about so far. Gear change is smooth and precise (for a Defender) , but I do take the time when changing gears, I reckon this is a Defender and not a race car (which , ahumm, may be different for Mustang owners... ) |
