Td5 Defender Missfire in Heavy monsoon rain

Hello all

2005 Defender 90 XS

I just returned from a 2400km trip down to New South Wales in Australia. At one period on the Pacific Hwy i got very heavy rain. When i say heavy i mean to the point of wipers on max but still very hard to see. You don't get this kind of rain in UK.

When this happened for a brief 5-10 min i started to get a missfire and loss of power. I was doing around 80kph (50mph) when it started but slowing down did not seem to change the issue.

Suddenly when the rain eased power was restored and i was off again. This only happened when it rained really really heavy.

So far i have checked.

- Oil in ECU plug = One tiny tiny droplet found but i had never Disconnected the plug in the life of the vehicle so i suspect that's not bad. Also once cleaning this small dropet the rain still caused an issue.

- Watched the throttle pedel area for water when missfiring was occurring for water. No water found.

I'm out of ideas but when i opened the bonnet after pulling over everything looked good and dry!

No it's just the standard factory side entry.

Check the air filter and see if it has been misshaped? Just thinking aloud, but dense air and water droplets hitting the hotwire MAF sensor could explain both the misfire and the sudden return to normal once the rain eased a little.

Is there any sign of there being water sitting in the bottom of the air intake box?

Does not look like any water has got in? Still dust in the bottom.

The air filter looks as though it has been wet at some point.

Can you remove the MAF sensor and just check to see if there is any debris either on the element or caught in the protective gauze/mesh?

Looks ok to me.

I will get a screw driver out tomorrow and remove it proper so i can see the other end.

With normal LR build tolerances, i'm suprised you never drowned inside your 90

My guess would be the air filter getting damp, when damp less air can be drawn through it so the engine is in effect strangled of oxygen so there is significantly reduced power. It wouldn't need to be so wet as to accumulate actual water in the air box.

I don't know if that would be enough to cause a miss-fire though.

Once the rain stopped the air filter would dry quickly as air is drawn through it so it would not necessarily be still damp when you checked it, although as pointed out before it looks like it may have been damp in the past.

Agree with above as I have suffered from the same.

The air filter gets damp, reducing the amount of air flow to the engine. In my case it also killed a two day old £100 MAF

You can see that your air filter has been wet
