Erratic idle on start up.
I went to work in my 110 today, from home to work, no issues. Went out in the lorry for a few hours, got back to depot and unloaded, ready for home...jumped in the 110 and the rev counter was all over the shop when I fired up, and you could hear the engine sounded "off". It drove fine but I could hear a bit of a high-pitched whine on occasion that I have not heard before.
By the time I had got home (about 2.5 miles) the idle had settled down.

Any ideas what this could be?

I had this problem and it was the EGR valve. It didn't log a fault code but the engineer thought the self-cleaning routine on engine switch off was noisy and that this was the likely problem. New valve was fitted and problem went. Self-clean routine almost silent compared to original one.

Hope this helps.

You know what, i've just realised I havn't been hearing the chucka-chucka noise for a while. Better let my dealer know eh? It should still do this even after a short journey, yes?

Is there any other way to identify it?

Had a chat with my service dept yesterday, basically they say unless there is an engine fault light showing there is nothing they can do, as warranty only covers failure, not failing. They also said its not unusual for the EGR to quieten down after a while when it beds in.
Does this sound right?

When my new valve was fitted it was quiet doing the self-cleaning routine straight away. The old one was very noisy in comparison. This was replaced under warranty - no lights on the dash, and no fault codes, no problem with erratic revving once the new one was fitted... "You know, Marge, mud is nothing more than wet dirt!" Do you know how it was considered a warranty issue then?

try to disconnect the electrical connector of the EGR valve (with ignition OFF).

If the erratic idle will go...........

I just complained about it and the dealer - Stratstone, Milton Keynes - replaced it, no hassle... "You know, Marge, mud is nothing more than wet dirt!" (Homer Simpson)

Interesting. I must say I have noticed no change in performance, it still drives the same. Just the occasional erratic idle. It was fine today on the two occasions I used it so its intermittent whatever it is.
