Got my reply from LR Germany
They claim the MY11 gearbox (MT82) is made by Getrag in Germany (Köln) and that the transfer box is made in England (but couldn't be more specific). Quite a surprise, considering the rumours Thought some of you might like to know Tell someone you love them today because life is short. But shout it at them in German because life is also terrifying and confusing... |

Good work finding that out ! The Chinese manufacture must be reserved for the m82 in the mustang . The boxes can't be that bad generally as quite a few on here seem to have done big mileages.
Makes me wonder if its just the tolerances on the spines that can be out, a little bit of lash will quickly develop into something much worse. I seem to also remember reading about some crazy expensive lube for the output shaft, some kind of grease based stuff, i wonder if they all get the splines properly coated at assembly. Best not to worry and just drive and enjoy the thing! Jonno |

one of the forum members had their gearbox pack in. this caused a debate about the quality of the ford -getrag box. There are rumours the same box used on the mustang is Chinese built. however it now seems to also be built in Germany and the UK, so safe to assume ours are European built. |

Jonno said it. Ford were daft enough to put Chinese-made MT82 gearboxes into new Mustangs. After several near-death experiences (synchros failing in heavy traffic on highways, gear levers popping out when turning etc.) Mustang owners in the US took out a class action against Ford and the NHTSA started an investigation (now dropped). Needless to say, making (allegedly) sub-standard boxes in China and putting them in expensive US sports cars might not have been the brightest move... Actually it isn't just paranoia. "Pals" on a Mustang forum in the US dismantled several knackered boxes - it wasn't pretty (failed parts made from stamped metal rather than cast etc.) At least ours seem to be assembled in Deutschland Tell someone you love them today because life is short. But shout it at them in German because life is also terrifying and confusing... |

Poor products can be made anywhere including here. The fact that it's chinese is largely irrelevant.

Two boxes at the same time on similar aged pumas in my company. I'm ready for a class action if you are...

Would be good to clarify who is talking about gearboxes and who is referring to transfer boxes. A new thread may be useful with the question to see how much of this is an issue!

Excellent idea, although I hope not to contribute for a while longer (mine is sick but not dead...yet)
Might also be nice to compare with the number of forum members with gear/transferboxes that are okay. If the MT82 is assembled in Köln and the LT230 in the UK, I would like to believe that failures are due to components or design and not incompetent employees Tell someone you love them today because life is short. It doesn't matter where they are put together - We all know what goes on on the Defender production line, and that's a UK outfit.
Knowing modern automotive manufacture, it will be a cheaply made part which has made an accountant happy but left an engineer pulling his/her hair out. It is a shame though, that JLR didn't stick with ZF in place of this gearbox, which I expect Ford couldn't wait to offload. |

The Discovery 3 had a six speed manual box from ZF and they are pretty strong.
