Here's my rear bumpers. Got them off of eblag, but I've seen a few other manufacturers that do them as well (one orange company used to do them)

Re: bumperettes for Pumas: it would be very useful if the suppliers indicated whether their various bumperette products actually fit 2007-2009 Pumas. Many simply say "fits into the grab handle holes" or similar which doesn't help as the outer pair are already occupied on a Puma.

I've looked to see what products I could fit a) without removing existing bolts; b) not having to drill new holes; c) come with the right nuts and bolts and d) fit a 90 SW with mudflaps and I drew a blank! There are many fine designs and the old LR military bumperettes which is what I was really after, but they all have problems and the suppliers basically "don't know" and don't really care. It's funny LR don't come out with a reasonable design for their Accessories catalogue. Trevor Wright

I had these (above) bumperettes on my old Td5 110 witch had rear seats, and thus the bolt holes were used in the crossmember (for the seatbelts) but the bumperettes fiited fine, as did the military ones i had before.

undo the bolts, pull them out, then put them through the bumperettes and back in. i think i might have used slightly longer bolts, ~5 or 10mm to compensate for the extra depth needed, but there should be no reason why they shouldn't fit puma or whatever.

One question: should these bumperettes - either military or other designs, be fixed with High Tensile stainless steel bolts or will non-HT suffice? Also, should you use washers or not? They don't take any bending load in normal operation but are quite likely to be used as a step at some point. I believe the Army use the military ones as jacking points sometimes.

I can't see wht high tensile bolts would be needed. if there's any impact, they'll be pushed towards the crossmember.
I use mine as steps also, but i only weigh 16.5 stone.... Wink unless you're really heavy then normal bolts will suffice.

I used to hi-lift off of my NATO bumpers sometimes... the bolts are fine, its ths bumper that bends a bit.

Any idea of the correct Torx size of the pair of big bolts in the rear crossmember used for the seat belts? I've no large Torx bits and tried measuring them and think they may be T70?

Answered my own question - they are T50 (bit loose fitting I found??). The smaller silver Torxs around the door etc are T40 (nice tight fit). Trevor Wright

Right !

I'm trying to keep up to speed on this as I too would like to fit the rear Bumperettes, so far I have established they won't fit ?

Am I now right in thinking that if I visit my local BAP bolt place on saturday morning and purchase some slightly longer bolts this will overcome the problem ?

Next question of course is ?
Can the torx head be accesed whilst the step is in situ ?
And apart from the two holes with bolts in them are all the other holes in the right place ?

It is the torx bolt on the rear of the crossmember that does not allow the fitting of bumperettes. In my case, it fouls the mounting bracket on the bumperettes.

When I get round to it, I will make up some aluminium spacers which will fit between the crossmember and the mounting brackets of the bumperettes which should solve the problem.

I will take some photos as I go.

The rear step has no significance, it bolts to the underside of the crossmember.

I believe some other makes of bumperettes do use the hole where the torx bolt is (although I have never personally seen them). In which case there is no problem. The existing torx bolt should be long enough to be used to hold the bumperette.

Ok, I have fitted mine, although just temporary, to take some photos. Need to paint my handywork.

This is what I did - I milled an extra slot on the outermost fixing bracket on the bumperette. This allows the bumperette to be moved further away from the offending torx bolt and align with a hole that is already present on the chassis. The bumperette now sticks out the side further than intended, but gives better side protection. It still protrudes less than the wheel eyebrows. This method only allows the fitting of one bolt per bracket, but this should be fine. Their main purpose is to protect the vunerable ally corners from knocks. Fitting this tpye of bumperette with sides will require the off side mud flap to be trimmed down a few cm, this is easily done with a hacksaw blade.

Even without a milling machine, it would be simple to just use a dril to make a new fixing hole in the bumperette, just measure carefully.

Pictures here. Sorry for the poor quality, done in a hurry.
