Oh Lord !!! This all sound very familiar. We have a 90 xs county and got it from the dealer in exeter back in may, its a may 09 reg. Only problem was a rough start a few months back where I turned it off and it restarted fine. It has subsequently been perfect rushing up and down portuguese mountains etc etc. On the run back to Roscoff the EMS light came on (first time ever) on the autoroute. We pulled over and phoned the dealer, they said no problem, which there was not (no limp mode) and carried on home. A few days later the EMS light was no longer there on start (on with ignition) so trip to dealers cancelled as fault had gone. However after picking up the vehicle from in laws after parking for 2 days engine sounded like a bag of spanners but only after a couple of minutes after running at idle. No EMS light. Switched off, started problem gone, 300 metres down road same problem, limp mode, no ems light.
Next day started fine, no spanners in bag sounds, but going back down M4 ems light came on again. No other symptoms. Switched on and off millions of times but ems light does not go out. Dealers at Exeter do not give me a warm fuzzy feeling about being able to sort this "never heard of this one before, Guv". Airbus driver here but WTF is going on? Any ideas? Please!! |

You need to get the EMS DTC's read, as there is a fault logged. The MIL will go out after three ignition cycles as long as the dtc passes the self test. The fact that the light stays on all the time now indicates to me that the fault is re occurring as it keeps failing the self test cycle. The EMS will record all tested DTC's and store them until they are cleared with a diagnostic tool.
My advice if it is still in warranty is get it into dealers and let them find and fix the problem. An explanation of fault codes: http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic5443.html |

Update: Explained problem to my local dealer and he at once agreed to book vehicle in at 1400hrs today. On way poor old "percival" went into limp mode in horrendous weather.........not at all nice. Arrived slightly late, servicing team immediately swung into action. Upshot was that there is a service instruction out that has a proceedure on a silicone issue in the insulation within the ECU!!!!! 2 hours later problem solved and I drove home with a smile on my face.......I just hope it lasts, but so far so good.
This site is a godsend and thanks for the advice. 2 points come to mind: 1. My warrenty runs out in june next year and I was advised by the service supervisor to extend it, I will. 2. If you have a problem with the EMS just call LR assist........limp mode is just to stressful if it kicks in in the weather we had today............ |

Well, update!! The car has been in and out of stratstone Newport 4 times now. They have done a reload of the software on the last visit. My wife has just told me that "Percival" has broken down. Again. Problem seems to be the same as before. OK for a hundred yards or so then rough running, limp mode, sounds like a bag of spanners. She tells me that she noticed a lot of grey/white exaust as well. land Rover assist have taken the car away. Again. This is a real pain, and I have to say LR customer care is not covering themselves in glory. One might have hoped that SOMEONE in Land Rover might be able to fix this car!!!

Well if anyone else has this sort of problem please get in touch. The guys at Stratstone Newport now seem to think the engine is overfuelling itself causing the bag of spanners sound limp mode and the white/grey exaust smoke.
They are going to fit a new valve in the fueling system/pump. Not entirely sure what that is as am still out in africa! Lets hope this fixes the issue once and for all. Lorryman I will be buying a scanguage II when I return....just won't tell the Mrs! |

Lorryman I have had my EGR deactivated for @12k/km, I reactivated for service and it worked as normal. I also use a little of the good oil 2SO.

Bet you noticed the difference with the tune off and the EGR working again Keeping that valve closed really does make a big difference to keeping the inlet side cleaner. I recently checked the MAP for contamination as well as the inlet manifold and was pleased at what I didn't find Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge That is 20,000 miles of use Brian.
