Megatoad. Was admiring your work and telling the Mrs. that your layout must be set near Solihull! Have not gone digital. Have the Peco "electro frog" system. You'd probably have rebuilt a series 1 quicker And cheaper!I have been at it since the early eighties and built the present layoutabout 10,11or 12 years ago. But one is never quite finished,is one? 1982 88" 2.25 diesel

cool, Spud - I was joking about the CIE train but there it is !
Everyday I pass through 4 level crossings on the Westport - Dublin line and while the passengers get to go on these new Hyundai trains (I've been on them and they are super quiet and smooth) they seem to have kept the old orange and black ones for freight. I always wind the window down when I'm stuck at the crossing when one of these old girls trundle through as the engine makes a superb noise ! (They never wash them though - they're always filthy) ...oops just looked up 141 on Wikipedia and they were withdrawn in 2010 - so what are the freight ones now ? - they don't half look like the old ones - but then I know SFA about trains ! |

The freight locos now are the bigger 071 class,a tremendous machine. Bigger, six axles instead of four and lots more power. Sadly my nearest IR station is Sligo! Derry only gets passenger DMU's so not much interest there. Lucky devil having to go through all those level crossings. 1982 88" 2.25 diesel

I had a little dig about on poo tube and yes its the 071s that make that fabulous noise. Just listen to this little blast from the past clip. Isn't that the most gorgeous diesel engine sound you ever heard ? I wish the Puma sounded like that !

Couldnt resist the transporter and 8 in transport 80"s when they became available as a £70 or so ebay item, unfortunatly the wife found out so I was in trouble for a while. Then of course I needed to find the Hornby transporters to move them round She didn't notice those I love the Irish locos you have. Would love to see a few more piccies of your layout, will post a few more of mine up too. Before I met the wife I used to live in a flat and buy locos as they were released and took my fancy (I ignored my credit card balance ) I ended up with 33 locos on a 9'x2' layout in the living room including a 4-6-6-4 Santa Fe Challenger! I then decided to swap to N gauge and go DCC so I sold all my old 'OO' I had collected as a child, only keeping about 15-20 of the newer locos. and built a two tired baseboard in the same space with Japanese bullet trains and US freigt locos plus a Class 04, 33 & 66. The DCC is a Lenz set 90 plus 2 Compacts as controllers and a rare LH30, 2 point controllers though I dont bother with them, a reverse switching module and computer interface. I then met and married the missus, she had a great loft as you can see just begging for a railway to run round it. After some juggling of options up there I decided to go back to OO so sold off the N gauge stuff and started rebuilding in 00 as you can see. I have basically gone for a sort of early BR so I can run LMS steam up to 1970's BR blue (I always wanted a decent 125 set which runs with 6 coaches) I like decent length trains so I have 5 platforms in the terminus on the lower level that can accomodate up to 8 coaches on 3 & 4. The trains then run out past the Brewery/goods are and up a ramp to a double circuit round the whole loft with 6 storage lanes at the far end plus a reversing loop round the chimney breast so a train go out and be turned around to eventually return to the terminus. I am back to 27 locos, the expensive bit is getting them all chipped up (no sound as yet) as you inevitably blow up the odd chip in installation or running, the Heljan 47 is the worst it draws the most current so burned out 2 Bachman decoders, now it has a 1.8amp TCS in it (£28 alone). |

Hello Megatoad. I will get some more photos taken and send them via PM or e-mail. Don't want to put too much model railway stuff on the site.People just might think we are a little "odd". Will be in touch. 1982 88" 2.25 diesel
