clunking noise
I have seen some post about clunking noises on stopping. One simple example is if you have a sliding plate for the tow hitch. As it is held in place with a removable pin there is some play in it. The sliding plate has enough free play to jar against the main assembly when you stop. As this is solid metal on solid metal it will transmit a sizable clunking noise through the vehicle. Not the solution to everyone's problem but it could explain some of the noises. 1982 88" 2.25 diesel

That could well be a cause, but the general complaint of a judder when coming to a stop is the handbrake. It can be fixed by shortening the outer cable at the adjustment.

The gearchange clonk can be fixed by fitting the uprated clutch plate. I had mine replaced last week after complaining of a rattle when idling in neutral. A surprise bonus was the elimination of the gearchange clunk.

The judder when coming to a stop was mainly when hot. I think I detected it at motorway speeds too when backing off the throttle.

The gearchange clunk could be at any time, but was smoother when changing up at higher revs or with a load in the back. The issue was because of weak (maybe broken) clutch plate springs. Quite a rattle when starting or switching off too. LR have a replacement with stronger springs. Not a recall, but the dealer replaced it under warranty.
