you can add a lot later, but airco is not exactly one of those things. better to include it from new... You never actually own a Defender. You merely look after it for the next generation.

Nothing's impossible with a Defender, that's why we buy them,, versatility !! But, retrofitting AC will be a ball ache, as well as not cheap !! California F1, 75th 110 "Kermit", 50th Ann V8, 90 V8 Hybrid, 55 Series 1 Main Brian James Trailer Dealer for South West UK |

All except AC there is a heck of a lot you could do. Not to mention the fun of fiddling about with it and waiting for goodies to arrive

Personally I would recommend the opposite, go for a higher spec model from the start and it will be a better investment.
No matter what extras you fit, when you go to trade in, it will be "Oh its only a base model sir". Richard Either a 90, 110 or 130. Discovery 5 |

And from the other end of the country...
My last Discovery2 had Air Con. After about 5 years it packed-in because I used it too little Our last 2 cars (wife's Mini Cooper) and my new Defender were bought specifically without aircon because we don't need it up here. On my XC70, I have to remember to exersize it every week or two in winter (and summer sometimes) to try and keep it moving OK. Aircon is good on the XC because it has black leather seats which get very hot in the sun, and also I do a lot of motorway miles where it's too noisy (and turbulent) to have the windows open. I don't seem to get problems with condensation which I know some people like to use the aircon for.. Good thing about the Defender, it's nice to drive steadily with the drivers window down...you get a bit more elbow room Defender "Puma" 2.4 110 County Utility (possibly the last of the 2.4's) |

I agree, You only need air-con for about 2 weeks a year in the UK but it would be tricky and expensive to fit.
Also consider ABS-Traction - from time to time we all make mistakes, that might save you a bunch! Also, higher spec models have upgraded alarms really depends on what you are going to be using it for as to whether you get A/R bars etc. take your time and choose carefully |

For my part, i'd ditch the a\c - that's what windows are for on a Defender. We use ours for 2-3 weeks a year.
What you mustn't do without are the heated screen (clears the ice in seconds), ABS (essential safety), TC (it's brilliant and you can always pull the fuse if you want to) and cubby box (like Mary Poppins' carpet bag), mind you, you may have a cubby now that you can transplant. Don't LR charge something like £500 for them? No sun roof and unless you have a massive family leave the 6th and 7th seats so that you actually have a boot to use. Hang on aren't they standard now? In which case, get them and remove them! |

No need, every time you push the rapid demist,(switch next to the heated r screen/mirrors) the AC will cut in automatically California F1, 75th 110 "Kermit", 50th Ann V8, 90 V8 Hybrid, 55 Series 1 Main Brian James Trailer Dealer for South West UK |

i went for a base model 110 sw with air con and winter pack (or cold climate pack) instead of a higher spec model because i didn't need or want traction control, abs, metallic paint or a silver front grille. i only had the air con as our family regularly travels 2 hrs to see the inlaws (every 3 weeks or so)
there is a stong arguement that 2nd hand buyers will not consider anything other than xs but i plan to keep mine for a long time. i like my retro 110 as Nene calls it |

Adding air con at a later date imho is not a great idea and will be more expensive as a retro fit. We drive defenders for their pure rawness and versatility. For me with defenders, less is best with respect to less to go wrong. Current...07 90 Puma commercial

agree - I have a County. With my last Disco2, it was always the "posh bits" that went wrong. I removed the ACE (Active Cornering Enhancement) after 7 years. The Aircon failed after 5 years. The ABS hubs caused 3 problems (the famous Disco2 "Three Amigos"). Happy to have a less complicated Land Rover But...had to have a County, as central locking, coloured roof, carpets etc I felt I "needed". With you on that as well as better MPG without all the weight of ABS, TC, Air Con etc. An XS is a monstrous weight compared to other models especially a 110 with the rear seats that must weigh around 30KG+ per seat Add into the mix over 50KG of winch and bumper, 75KG roof-rack, 20KG of rear bumperettes, same again maybe for a drop down tow set, storage boxes...the list goes on and some of these motors must be well over their body mass index A basic model 90 must be a flyer compared to my heavy lump |
