I noticed that I am using some cooling water but very negligable. (1-2 cups in 3 months.)
I also always get that sweet smell of antifreeze on startup but once warm no longer. I opened the cap other day when the engine was warm and there was plenty pressure - so the cap must be holding. However, when I put it back on, after 3 minutes or so I hear air escaping from the cap. Is it possible that the cap only works under higher pressure at say operating temp of water and up till this point it allows the pressure to escape? Any ideas? A new cap is only a few Rands so I may just go and buy another to compare. Cheers James Puma 110 - gone Series III 1973 - going strong |

Hi James,
I used to think I was smelling coolant until I realised that it was the smell of diesel exhaust. I was used to the sooty smell from the 300Tdi but the Puma engine exhaust smells different (must be the EGR working). Never-the-less your coolant usage seems excessive. I decided just to buy a new cap and see what happens. Waiting for a new water hose to be fitted and will test for the smell of antifreeze again.
Dealer said they would only loose a bit of coolant when changing the hose - I hope they replace with readymix coolant so as to have same ratio - never will know for sure Puma 110 - gone Series III 1973 - going strong |
