Indicator cut off location??
Put a new indicator stalk on my 90 ages ago now, as I burnt the switch out when I first got the truck, there's a little piece of metal that goes over the steering wheel centre whhich knocks the indicator off, but I keep putting it in the wrong place, anyone else got this/fixed it? Or if yours works ie cancels at the right time fancy takin a picture to show me the location? Cheers 90 Puma HT

I think I know what you mean, you must put the metal parts on the steering wheel at the bottom and top and line the blue cancel part.
hope that helps Ash Thumbs Up

With the wheels straight ahead and the steering wheel off have a look at the blue ring that is part of the switch. You should see two U shaped cutouts and these need to be at the 12 and 6 o'clock position. The metal prong(s) on the steering wheel then slide into these.

Had my wheel off two weeks ago but I didn't take any pictures.

and the problem with that is you can be 180 degrees out.

This means that you have to turn the wheel an extra 180 degrees to get it to cancel Sad

How do I know? I made this mistake last weekend when changing the light switch on the column Whistle

If I read the 180 degree out correctly then - yes !

If the blue (in my case) ring is 180 out to start with that needs correcting.

The cancel ring on mine has a cut out top and bottom, the old wheel had one pin at the top only but the new one has one at the top and one at the bottom so it would always engage even if the cancel ring was 180 out.

I was very careful not to move the cancel ring when I changed the wheels over but can see that if it is 180 out there will be problems.

Well spotted Jon Thumbs Up

Yes you have read it correctly. However, when I took the thing apart I undid everything and had a play, hence the 180 degrees out at the end.

If you left the blue ring in place and just changed the steering wheel, then it is hard to imagine that you have the ring 180 degrees out. I noticed that it was possible to put the wheel on with the pins missing their locating holes, you might also have done this.

I may be wrong (I am working from memory) but I think the metal prong on the clip thingy should be in what would be the 9-o'clock position as viewed from the drivers seat with the steering wheel fitted and the wheels in the straight-ahead position, if that makes any sense.

I.e., the prong should be positioned so that it is on the side where the stalk switch is when the wheels are straight ahead.

When I renewed my indicator stalk last year, the metal clip/prong thingy had already fallen off the wheel and was stuck on the column instead.

By the way, it is possible to replace the switch without swapping the metal mounting plate over, by unscrewing the old switch from the old plate and replacing it with the new one, but be advised that the plate retains a number of sprung contacts in the switch which can fall out if you do this. I did it this way for some reason I now can't remember (it may be the wiper switch is rivetted to the plate? I really can't recall now), but you do have to be careful nothing falls out of place.

Not on mine !

The steering wheel would be 90 degrees out !

I did see your original post before I changed my wheel and was expecting what you said but it was not the case.

As my old wheel virtually fell off in my hands I know nothing was disturbed when I removed it and the cut outs at 12 and 6 correspond to the pins on the wheel in the same position.

The metal prong on my old wheel was an integral part of the casting so maybe there were some changes done in 2009 or the set up for 48 spline/XS variants is different ?

I will try and unconfuse ? you now with a few questions.

When you take the wheel off is there one metal prong at the top with the wheels straight ?

When you look at the switch on the column with the wheel off are the cut outs to accept the prong also in the 12 and 6 position ?

If they are then they are located correctly. However, they may be 180 degrees out, ie the one at the bottom should be at the top if they do not cancel correctly. Try rotating the blue ring 180 degrees and put the wheel back on and see if the problem is fixed.

You also need to make sure the prong on the wheel is located in the cut out - not either side of it.

Failing all else, drive down to Ilminster and I will help you fix it - frost bite allowing Thumbs Up
