2005 Defender 90 Td5 HT Cairns Blue
is this normal
I have just had some work done on my TD5 Defender. I have had a decat pipe fitted, EGR blank and a stage 1 remap.

I have noticed that since the work has been done, on start up from cold there is quite a bit of smoke from the exhaust. at first i thought it was just steam due to the extremely cold weather at the moment but on closer examination it has a blue tinge and is definitely very smelly. Much more smelly than before decat pipe was fitted.

Is this normal with this type of work? I haven't seen or heard it mentioned before.

The smokiness seems to disappear as the engine warms but I have noticed some sooty deposits around the cut out in the mudflap, again this wasn't there before. Any ideas what is causing this, the pipe, the EGR kit, the remap or a combination of all three.

I like the overall improvement in driveability that the work has achieved but I'm not sure about the pall of smelly fug that is left behind where the car has been idling.

I also had some Bilstein B6 shockers fitted. They are excellent. No rock and roll on uneven roads anymore and the rear door has stopped rattling!

If it's blue and stinky smoke it's probably oil. Excess smoke after a remap tends to be black (due to over-fuelling) and only happens at higher revs under load.

What's your mileage? My old Td5 on 110k ish used to smoke a wee bit on startup, but it soon cleared (i.e. within 5 seconds).

Guess it could be the lack of restriction in the exhaust letting the smoke escape where it wouldn't have before (or would have taken longer to come out so you wouldn't have noticed)? I've noticed when going from a straight-thru'd old Td5 to a newer one with a cat and silencers, that there's less smoke but more steam on cold mornings.

when i removed my egr and fitted a straight through i noticed alot of smoke especailly in the mornings but that was only when i revved it up now i have had my alive tune up there is no smoke what so ever really good Thumbs Up who done your remap Question

Hello All, This is my 1st thread I have replied to but looking through fourm I felt the urge to join and reply to this post, basically I also have fitted a de-cat along with a turbo booster amongst other tuning parts and had a remap, and have also noticed as Killer90 my defender smokes alot when starting from cold, the smell as mentioned I feel is just the obnoxious fumes no smell of burning oil, me being me and fairly new to the world of LR Defenders assumed this is normal as we have increased the fuel uptake and after a short while the smoke disappears!
Am I also in the right direction in thinking removing the Cat will increase the smell of fumes?
Which leads me onto another debate what is your consensus on De- Cats becoming a Mot failure? I obviously fitted one to which will fail the Mot later in the year, we all remove the Cat to which is one of the 1st tuning practices to be done! So it looks if mine will have to go back on as I suppose it will basically be a insurance problem as well?

cats aren't a requirement for an MOT.

blue smoke i9s oil, could have turbo seal issues that has bheen highlighted by the remap and boost box etc.

Decat and egr are the best mods to do, easy, cheap and allow the engine to breath better

Perhaps I read it wrong but one of the land rover magazine mentioned a rule change to include the following, if your vehicle was fitted with a cat as standard at the time of manafacture then it must be fitted at time of Mot!

New cat regs only apply to spark ignition (ie petrol) engines. Cat not required on compression ignition.

and also on a defender they changed it so many times some years had them some dont so i dont think it would matter at all even if the rules were for diesels Thumbs Up
