More wiring problems
Anyone done a 300tdi to td5 conversion, using the td5 dash and engine loom, but wiring into the 300tdi wing looms and steering column stalks?

I have, and then cut and joined the wires into the light switch, indicators, wipers etc as the plugs were different. Also cut and joined the wing looms to the td5 loom, joining same wire colours together, and bunching the earths to one big earth wire in the td5 loom. Some td5 wires don't get used as there is no front fogs or headlight levelling, so these aren't connected.

When I connect the battery the headlights and one side light comes on, but the headlight switch does nothing. The wipers won't turn off, horn doesnt work and only front offside indicator flashes but at double speed.

The chassis loom has not arrived yet so using two large wires from the pump but connecting to the dash harness doesn't work, so I have to connect the wires direct to the battery, but atleast I can start the engine this way and it works!

Would not having the rear chassis loom connected cause all these problems? 1996 Defender 130 converted to TD5 and auto

Thinking some more, are the 300tdi indicator, light and wiper stalks the same as td5 ones?

If not, and I wire them up using the td5 loom will it cause problems?

Yes, 300 indicator switches are the same as Td5 (that white "hard" plug, as opposed to the rubberised bullet connectors used on pre 300's)

If you've not got the rear loom plugged in (and thus no rear indicator bulbs) then the front will flash double speed (same as if one of the bulbs blow) as there's half the resistance.

Not sure about your headlights though... bear in mind that all Td5 looms have the "dim-dip" wiring in place (well, i think all did) but if the dim-dip isn't specified then instead of the relay unit then there is a dummy relay with just a link across the 2 main terminals to bring the headlights on as per normal. You'll find this relay behind the speedo binnacle, usually the RH of the 3 relays there (pink coloured) plus the large wire wound resistor under the O/S wing.... so there could be somthing wrong with this?

As a side note, you'll need the ignition "on" for the headlight dipped beam to work, although this is the same as 300s, so you'll be used to that.

Headlight on/off switch is just a 3 wire loom... large brown is the power feed; red is the sidelight & dash panel and blue is the headlights, so connect brown to red, brings on sidelights, brown to red AND blue brings all on.

Sorted!

Where I bunched the three earth wires together and joined them to one of the earths on the td5 loom, I picked one that was live, so must be a switched earth (apparently).

Used another earth that was normal and all ok!

What are the switched earths used for on a TD5?

Was the one you'd picked black or black with a tracer colour (or something else entirely)?  1988 90 Td5 NAS soft top

Quite a lot of ECU controlled stuff is earth switched on Td5s, especially interior lights, alarm bits etc.

I used all black earth wires.

Put a meter on them and worked out which ones were live and which not with the battery connected.

I've got RAVE on the computer, but seems geared towards NAS defender with V8?
How can you tell from a wiring diagram if an earth is switched or not?

Still got a problem with the wipers but will start another thread on that.
