Is it possible to fit the gearbox out of a puma into a 300TDi. Been doing a few dual carriageway journeys and was just thinking how nice a 6th gear would be. Would it be possible without too much work, or am I just dreaming?

T1G UP - Can't justify the cost of an overdrive for an extra gear just now
Sounds like its back to a Disco transfer box, thanks for the input guys! ![]() Rebuilt 1996 black/white Defender 90 300 TDi |

On a 300 Tdi it's easy peasy, get a 300 Tdi Disco transfer box
![]() Doesn't take long to swap, see if you like it. I can't believe I ummed and ahhhed about doing mine for so long, it's magic ![]() ![]() ![]() |

I've been looking at it for a while, but not had the time to do it. But with it going off the road this summer I might as well!

Apart from cost and the manufacture of suitable adapter plates etc., could you live with a very low 1st gear?

Forgive me if I'm speaking from the other end, but if you put in a new 6 speed box then you won't gain a lot as the Puma transfer box has Disco ratios in allready, so just might as well just do the transfer box

As Martin says get a Disco transfer box. I bought one from the classified for mine for £30 and am having it fitted on 25th of this month. I'll let you know how I get on, assuming that the box I bought isn't full of nails! James ![]() |

Actually, that is an interesting point, since low 1st would be excessively low with the 300Tdi transfer box. Also, since the 300Tdi does not have the idle jack as programmed into the TDCi, hill descents in low 1st would become dangerous. |

i doubt you will get the box to fit, its very long and adaptors plates are apparently a nightmare, or so i was told by a very reliable firm who specialise in transmissions.
1.2T t box or the O/D, if its got an electrical fault just bypass the speed sensor and sort a switched supply to the solenoid. its normally the speed sensor that has the problem. Cheers James 110 2010 XS Utility 130 2011 M57 bespoke Camper 90 2010 Hardtop 90 M57 1988 Hardtop |
