metal chips on my tranny...
I scheduled for an oil change for my tranny oil. After we took out the magnetic drain plug there's several metal shaving sticking its has a brass or bronze color:blub:

We filled it up again and drive around for 15 minutes and drained it and found no more chips at the plug. Drained it again and off I go. Shifting was a lot better after that oil change.. Should I get worry about it?

Its my first time to check and change my tranny oil after my warranty expires. Can I still claim a warranty for this? Crying or Very sad
I think its the syncronizer that has been shave off Big Cry

How much metal shavings are we talking about? Did you take a picture? --

When you say tranny..... does this mean transfer box or gearbox?

If it was just a few flakes I wouldn't be too concerned, just keep an eye on it for future reference.

Also, what is the odometer reading? When was the oil changes last (if it has been changed)?

If the warranty has expired there is no chance that they will do any work on it. If you transmission problems before the warranty ran out you would possibly have a case.

sorry no pics. not that much that covers the entire magnet of the drain plug.

yeah the transmission gearbox. And yeah its just a few flakes.
40,000 kms already. 1st time to change the oil and was surprised of what i saw. ill just monitor it every 6 months then Sad

When you say "flakes", do you mean cornflakes or a bit of dandruff?
I changed my oil at 9000 km (before first service) because I was having changing problems.
There was a bit of "dandruff" on the plug but I assumed that wasn't bad for a cheap Chinese gearbox.
Runs much better now. I wouldn't worry yet - nothing to do anyway unless it breaks Whistle

Matt Tell someone you love them today because life is short.
But shout it at them in German because life is also terrifying and confusing...

Thought mine was going to get changed yesterday on it's first service but they now renew...

Manual Gearbox oil at 120K Shocked
Transfer Box oil 48K
Front and Rear axle 48K
Engine Coolant 120k
Ancillary Drive Belt 120K

Will change the gearbox and transfer box oil soon I think...what oil are you meant to use again?

The idea of this is to keep the servicing bills down apparently to compete with other marques. The coolant for instance is not changed for 10 years or 120K but they said they do check it effectiveness Rolling Eyes The example by the service manager was compare the routine maintenance of the TD5 to the TD4. The TD4 has been stretched out a lot more to reduce customer service costs. Important when people are comparing running costs between marques when buying new apparently Rolling Eyes

These are all synthetic oils and long life coolant so they do last long periods of time (unless water goes into the tranny). And actually those are min intervals. Kind of fun though to change all these fluids Thumbs Up

GL-4 75W-90 for the gearbox. Puma 110" SW

I've now used Motul Motylgear 75W-90 (full-synthetic) in three cars (including the 110) and found it to be very good (and sort out some problems) - bit expensive though Shocked

Not sure if LR would know it wasn't their own brand Whistle Tell someone you love them today because life is short.
But shout it at them in German because life is also terrifying and confusing...

I've often changed gearbox oils in other cars I've owned over the years and have never seen metal shards in the drained oil to the extent that was evident in the Puma box after a mere 300 miles.

As there is no strainer/filter in gearboxes I can only assume that those particles have an abrasive effect on synchros over time. It has been well documented on this forum that owners of hard worked (regular towing) Pumas have had gearbox problems so just putting 2+2 together I thought it best to change the oil annually for the sake of a couple of hours contortionism doing the damn job !

do you have to take the driver seat box cover off to get to the gearbox filler hole?
last time i changed oils was on my 300. engine oil - no drips, tbox - no drips, gearbox - it went everywhere except in the bucket and when i went to fill it up using a hose pipe and a funnel i missed the ruddy hole and dumped a cupfull on the drive.

anyway - now in my last year of warranty and as i do such low mileage i have not done the 6 month oil changes so far. will do so this year if i take it down through France. BM52
