OK so don't shoot the newbie for asking this, but has there been a recent debate on this topic?
I've owned many LR's for the last 15 years, and the Defender remains my favourite for being honest, classless and fun. I think the biggest single change to capability is with how the power is applied to the ground - wheels/tyres. Due for an upgrade so what will it be (baring in mind the usual compromise). I want strength and off road traction with good on road behaviour. Starter for 10 - Cooper STT on Terrafirmer Dakar? What about Zu and BFG Mud2? Thoughts ? This is border country and the Romans built a wall for a reason! |

I think that the BFG AT is the best all rounder. We often fit these on our vehicle conversions, and although their ride can be a little harsh, the on road holding, and off road capability make these our premium choice.

I'm putting 265 Cooper Discoverer S/T Maxx tyres on my 110 tomorrow - I've heard very good things about them both on and off road. We shall see... Tell someone you love them today because life is short.
But shout it at them in German because life is also terrifying and confusing... |

Anything with BFG depending on what you use it for, plus rims to suit your choice. Cheers

don't worry we've all asked questions on subjects that have been done to death !
Based on forum advice I went for standard 16" boosts shod with equally standard BFG AT 235/85s and they are awesome. Quiet and grippy. I don't have ABS and during a recent brief snowy/icy spell I stood on the brakes on safe bits of snow and ice covered road to get a feel for their limits and I couldn't get them to lock up ! Amazing grip. The only small criticism I have of them is that they have a habit of storing small stones in the grooves which they then launch at the underside at speed with a bang ! |

for BFG All Terrains, great handling, surprising off road capabilities too.. IMHO best all around tire. there are better tires for either road or for off, but the AT does a great job at doing both. still a handful in the wet in 285 format
BFG Muds are great off road, but the on road noise isn't really that practical for a daily driver, and are "tricky" in the wet, especially with a v8, more so with no TC & ABS Alex 110 Tdci Double Cab |

BFG M/T are great all round tyres. Not practical as a daily driver due to NOISE? Well have used them on our daily drives for 10+ years. Driving a DEFENDER and complaining about tyre road noise Yes stopping distance of a M/T is greater then an A/T in the wet. Once you accept that then there are great tyres. Yes we had them on our 3.9 V8 90"hybrid with no TC/ABS etc. Just drive to the road conditions and you will be fine with BFG M/T Reiver, I hate to say this you will not get one common answer, as tyres/wheel combinations are very much a compromise and a personal choice Brendan |

Agree with you leeds, it is a bit stupid due to road noise, but we choose at's because they are more comfortable and we don't need the m/t abilities all the time. we do have m/t's on the 90 v8 weekend toy. and yes, once you're used to them, they are fine. at the end of the day, two different tires for two different applications. 110 Tdci Double Cab

I have Mickey Thompson Baja ATZ's on my Puma and I am very happy with these all terrain tyres as they are quiet on the road and are great in the snow/offroad and in the soft wet sand of the surf recovering my boat

That's a very good point that most people seem to forget, the larger the open tread patterns the less rubber there is in contact with the road, hence the larger stoping distances. Russell 2011MY 110 XS USW Black |

Must say although very true in the real untested world I've never noticed the difference in a Defender, however a Discovery 3 / 4 a RR snort V8 SC on MTRs is fun as is a FFRR TDV8 but they are in a different speed league

When I change tyres it'll probably be Grabber AT2s or BFG ATs, but I'm also interested in these here's the
REVIEW I know somebody else on here was also interested in these but have yet to see a forum members verdict after having had them fitted 2005 TD5 90 Hard Top Beer 'n Sex 'n Chips 'n Gravy |
