I've used the Bluefin product before, as I've found the customer service and ultimate power increase to be excellent. The best feature (for those of us under LR warranty) is that we can reload the original settings before LR warranty based service without quibble.
That said, the latest Bluefin upgrade for the Puma enegine is somewhat weird in the power delivery, It pulses, rather than smooth delivery. Anyone else has the same experience? This is border country and the Romans built a wall for a reason! |

I would normally agree Rob, especially with the previous help and support I've had from independents such as Jeremy Fearn down there in Derbysland.
However, the LR warranty boys don't like their artistry to be tweaked and the beauty of Bluefin is that you can re-install original settings without detection before service work. I'm not aware that this is possible with JE etc. This is border country and the Romans built a wall for a reason! |

With the ATRIC device from Alive, you can put the original map back on, I believe without trace. The ATRIC can also hold 3 maps at once (one of them original). Tell someone you love them today because life is short.
But shout it at them in German because life is also terrifying and confusing... |

'Overboosting' probably. Gary or Pete will be able to explain. Had a similar experience with my remap at top end. Not particularly helped if you also have a RAI, performance filter or decat that the remap is not configured for. If you go through life with your head in the sand....all people will see is an ar5e!!

Superchips will give you a remap. But that's all! They are not land rover specialists, and will only give you a general remap. I know because I've seen their work.
Only ALIVE and BAS, out of all the names mentioned, have the capability and experience with the vehicle to produce a remap that is actually tailored to your needs, as their are millions of potential changes that can be made within the software. We can shut off the EGR valve all the time too, as discussed recently in a post on here. Again, there is only us and BAS that can close the EGR valve within the software. I must note that ALIVE don't have any issues with raised air intakes, decats, or performance filters. If you want to fit any of these with our remaps, you can do at any time, without any side effects. All this can be done using our ATRIC module, here: http://www.alivetuning.com/Alive-Tuning-Re...nsole.html If you have any further questions, please give us a call and we will be happy to discuss your needs further, to ensure you get what you want. Regards, Gary. |

@Reiver, do you notice any excessive black smoke from the exhaust when you get the pulsing? As many on here have already stated you really need to get any remaps done on your defender by a LR tuning specialist who knows how to tweak the millions of bytes of data to deliver a faultless tailored remap. I am an Alive customer and have done some testing for Gary in the past with some remap files. I am also lucky enough to have the diagnostic equipment to be able to watch and record the live data of what is happening to the engine with each different remap, so much so you can sometimes see the little tweaks between remap versions. And when something is not quite right, an email to Gary at Alive with an explanation results in a further tweaked remap file with the issue resolved. I know Pete at BAS offers the exact same service but I can't comment on BAS as I have not used them for a remap.
In the past I had a Shogun and I bought a plug in Ralliart module from Mitsubishi (Was about £680 IIRC) to give me a bit of a power boost when towing. This stayed on the shogun for about a month as the reek of black smoke from the exhaust when accelerating due to over fuelling was annoying and risked long term damage to the engine. Most generic remaps and plug in boxes are exactly that, generic as in take for example 200 all make tuners, they all have the exact same remap file for your defender with none of the tweaks or tailoring that a specialist brand specific tuner can supply. If you where to do a search on here about remaps you will see just how many of us use Alive and BAS for our tuning needs as they are the specialists and at the end of the day I want a specialist tweaking my 30K Defender. This is the post Gary was referring to in his reply: http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic10564.html HTH Brian. |

Thanks all for your help and advice. I think the issue is over boosting and ECU compensation - I also note that the Bluefin device states Ford by the serial number, so it's probably a generic version that doesn't cater for the significant LR re-work. Yes it does smoke, but primarily from cold.
Sooooo I will wait to see what Superchips come back with in terms of mods, but if no joy I will try for money back and off to you ALIVE ! Best This is border country and the Romans built a wall for a reason! |

Just to close this one down for posterity. I moaned to Blusfin about the upgrade. Good comms and good response. Mike (techy) uploaded a new mapping which made a whole load of smooth difference. Tried the original again to guage difference, and it's a world apart. Very happy now and they even added the top speed delimiter for yuks!
