Transfer Box + CDL problem ? Or not ?
Hi guys! First of all, Happy new year everybody ! Thumbs Up

I'm having (I think!) some troubles with my transfer box ...

Last time I went for an off road ride (the one I posted a few weeks ago), on some obstacles I had some troubles passing through, and my friends on the outside kept telling me "Turn on the CDL, turn on the CDL" to wich I answered the "It's on, It's on" and they replied " No it's not, it can't be!"...

Apart from that I noticed a gap, a clearance on the transfer box lever ...

My first question is:
How does your transfer box lever stays normally ? Mine is like this ... After driving for a few meters it moves from the right almost to the centre ... (also if I touch it gently with my finger it jumps to the middle)



I took it to the dealer, as I had some paint issues to fix (garbage under the paint on the windscreen starting to make bubbles = painted!)... apparently they replaced the transfer box lever due to the gap and the fact that the CDL was not working properly...
Picked it up this morning, and guess what ... Although I've seen the "old" transfer box lever the "new" one is the same as the pic above(an overlap of two pics)!!

Secondd question :
Waht is the easiest way to check if the CDL is working ? They tried it at the dealer on that elevator and said it was good ... But what is the beast way to test it off road ? Regards

Is your diff lock light coming on/off ?

Easy way to check is jack up one front wheel.
If CDL is engaged, you should not be able to turn the wheel by hand. ( due to it being locked to rear wheel)
If not engaged, you should be able to turn.

The light always turns on ... but I'm also pretty sure that it isn't always engaged...

I'll try it on the weekend ...

And your transfer box lever ? Does it have a gap like mine, returns to center ? Regards

Sorry, not sure what you mean by gap...

I'm not really the best to judge, as I believe my box also has a slight problem...
But let me tell you what mine does, which appears broadly correct.

I have no issue engaging CDL, it moves about 10 cm to the left, and you can do this in any position L, N or H
moves easily, and is notably in a different position to when disengaged.

Now disengaging is where the fun begins, with my box it always has an issue. I can move it to the right, but then it seems to 'spring' back, to as you say, somewhere between engaged and disengaged.
So I then reverse back 100m or so, and try again ( idea is to unwind transmission), this usually fixes it, so it can be moved to the right correctly... If not I do it move the truck a few meters and try again.

(one thing Ive noticed is it appears to be easier to disengage in low range)

Now... I had my indy look at it before, and he adjusted it, and also changed the transfer box oil, this helped (though seems to have been only for a few weeks)
He also 'reminded me' of a few points
1) never force the lever, if it doesn't go it, move truck , eg do seem reversing.
2) use it regularly, this is really a case or use it or lost it!

CDLs are a common problem, so you will find lots of discussion on net.

One thing, you say your light is perm on, this could mean the lock sensor is screwed in too far, (depending on age of vehicle) and is fowling the movement.

Also does your vehicle 'crab' when you do very tight turns on tarmac, if it does, then it's locked on, if not it probably isn't - but check Smile

Ah, I now understand your photo ... didn't notice the overlay before Smile

Yes, I sometimes get this when I try to disengage, and drive forward.. If it does this I assume it's still locked, and then do the unwind procedure, until it stays right.
(my diff lock light is not working at the moment, so have to be sure)

now,
BEFORE I took it to my garage and had it adjusted, it was doing this all the time...
But what I found, was that the CDL was not engaging, even though lever would go to the left,
and then when I pushed it to the right, it would tend to return to the center position.
(thread I posted at the time here)

so test it, as important you know if CDL is engaged or not, then get the garage to adjust it.
(there's a good video on YouTube about how the transfer box works, where the guy has stripped the box down... If you are interested)

@MK (or others Smile) a couple of questions, which i think are on-topic, when disengaging....
- do you push it firmly to the right even if it's resisting, or you can feel the spring?
- do you change whilst stationary or moving?
- is it easier in low/high... Or makes no difference?

to test it as above.

jack one wheel up. with CDL engaged it will not turn far 1/4 turn? with it disengaged it will turn all way around.

it doesnt matter which wheel you do it on. Cheers
