That's just the air sliding over all the polish and valeting products you've got on yours, just turn the radio up and all will be well

I'm very glad to have come across this thread - I suspect mine does this too. I hear this subtle noise at about 90- 100kmh in 6th (it does happen in other gears but engine noise at same speed drowns it out somewhat) when on power - coast, it goes away. LR dealer here has put the "ears" on everything and can't work it out.
I'll keep watching this thread and if I find out what is going on I'll report back. |

Sounds like mine probably does the same. Not the loud turbo whistle I have to fix ![]() I guess it's done it since new but I only noticed it when I installed a hardware speed limiter. Initially, I was sure it was coming from the limiter and gave the company all kinds of grief until I took it out ![]() To me it sounds more electronic than mechanical and seems to come more from the inside than outside. My old Powerbook made the same sound when on the internet. 10,000km later and it hasn't changed. I just turn the radio on and ignore it now ![]() But shout it at them in German because life is also terrifying and confusing... |

I have (same???) noise from the end of September. The Indians didn’t admit it was a rear diff.
I am now with a freelander (they gave to me cause I had to make a trip to Kythera island) and they decided(approved) last week to change the rear diff after almost 3 months.so i have to wait another month to sent the diff to Greece. I think if there was no guarantee they would change it in a week cause i would had to pay for this ![]() ![]() I am 3 mouths without my def and I do pay tax and insurance for this period. I think there is a 3 years guarantee. It is reasonable to have an extension of guarantee as it their fault. otherwise they can change it after for example a year ![]() ![]() but i still love my defender ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() .............and my dogs ![]() ![]() |

It's difficult to know if we are experiencing the same thing here...I do agree with Zagato - I doubt my issue will be resolved until it goes bang with some finality.

The more I try to work this noise source out, the more confusing it seems. At first I suspected driveline somewhere - diffs, wheel bearings, UV's shaft out of balance etc; but the LR mechs put the "ears" onto what they could and dismissed these. The wheel bearings are fine too - just repacked them. Then I thought it might be an engine bay noise, and indeed it might, and now I suspect it may even be tyre related. It's maddening!

Whine on over run tends to be diffs, whine on load in every gear tbox
Bearing, whine in specific gear - gear box bearing. Trouble is with you puma guys , your engines too quiet and your Desperate to find something wrong ![]() It's a work truck , use it abuse it , if whines turn the radio up :-0 Think most of the whines that can be heard from the new puma defenders Comes from the drivers seat Pmsl!! Have fun be happy |

Great post. And I think you are spot on with the Puma being a culprit in it being relatively silent, and that thought is always right behind the one that thinks something may be wrong. Doesn't mean it may not be worthwhile discussing with others to satisfy oneself though. ![]() |

I tend to agree. Mine has just started doing a low-frequency whooop-whooop when lifting off the accelerator at 100kmh+. As soon as I described it to the workshop manager, he said 'rear diff'. Also I saw this on another forum: -- 2010 Defender Puma 90 + BAS remap + Alive IC + Slickshift + Ashcroft ATB rear 2015 Range Rover Sport V8 Supercharged ![]() ![]() Defender Puma Workshop Manual: https://bit.ly/2zZ1en9 Discovery 4 Workshop Manual: https://bit.ly/2zXrtKO Range Rover/Sport L320/L322/L494 Workshop Manual: https://bit.ly/2zc58JQ |

Mine went in for a few (noisy) creaks and rattles yeterday and I happened to mention a whine on overrun.
It's now in again next week for a new rear diff..... |

Problem solved Scotty
![]() Mine is under load....gearbox!!! ![]() ![]() Harwoods are very good about it asking for me to actually drive the mechanic around so he can hear it as it may be hard for him to make the noise. Usually garages say "Don't worry Sir, leave it with us, we'll have a look at it" and then when you pick it up they say "Sorry Sir we couldn't find anything" ![]() ![]() Anyone know out of interest if it's an engine out job or can you drop the box from underneath? |
