This follows my earlier question about the timing of changing the coolant fluid...
With my 3rd annual service in Switzerland at 52k km, the local Land Rover dealer said to have checked the fluid levels of gearbox, transfer case and diffs... But no change of oils was done as this is not required by LR. So still using the ex factory oils for all that. I am using my SVX for normal road (mainly city and intercity) driving, no stressy off road use at all. Is the above (no change of those oils at all to date) reasonable, or should I ask them on my own expense to now that the car is 3 years old and has 55k km right now, to change all those fluids by new? For engine oil, with an average of 18k km per annum, I already am already having extra intermediate oil/filter changes in between the annual service, so change it every 6 months or 9k km. with normal (12 ish k per year) mileage, I would change the engine oil and filter twice annually. Its so easy compared to any other vehicle - no ramps needed and everything easy to reach.
As regards gearbox oil I will change mine annually because there are question marks over the Getrag box's longevity (just a hunch from the many many posts on problems with its application in the Puma and Mustang). When I first bought the Puma I changed it straightaway and was surprised to see the sheer amount of abrasive swarf that came out of it ! Probably not necessary but because they are again so easy to get at I would change the transfer box and diff oils annually as well.What harm can it do ? And if you plan to keep it longterm there's nothing like the satisfaction that the job's been done properly at a fraction of the dealership cost  |

OK, that is unanymous and clear advise. For the engine oil I am ok with my semi-annual oil and filter changes.
Gearbox, transfer case and diffs need to be done asap. Can someone tell me the respective best oils to use (i.e. brands and types) for each of the three above? I used Castrol SMX S available from Halfords B&Q etc. I believe the name has changed recently to Multivehicle or something like that but its the same stuff just different livery. I'll vouch for its effectiveness as since August (when I changed it) its been smooth, clunk free, crunch free gearchanges even from 2nd to 3rd which is where many guys have had problems. Its a pain to do but when its done its done

Any 80W-90 or 75W-90 (this for sure will be synth) GL-5 will do it for all except the gearbox, which uses any 75w-90 GL-4, only. I stay away from those oils stating GL-4 and GL-5 for manual transmission.
Tbox can also use GL-4 spec. Have a look to opieoil.uk or so. Puma 110" SW ............................................................. Earth first. Other planets later |

engine : Castrol Edge o-30 or Magnatec 5-30 Gearbox: Castrol SMX S Diffs and Transfer case : Castrol Syntrax 75/90 and a couple of pumps of lithium based grease in the propshaft nipples |
