Amazing new BBS development.
I've posted this here as at the moment it's only posted on the D3 forum but it in future may help a lot of people get things diagnostically done on their car for a very small price.

The words are copy and paste from colons D3 thread. Full thread here. http://www.disco3.co.uk/forum/topic73436.html
I have been involved in the beta testing of this for the last 18 months and it's a fantastic new state of the art way to diagnose and male activations to a car.

Amazing new BBS development.

Although it's been a very tough year for us with massive interruptions caused by the on going Power situation here and our re location, we have still continued to develop stuff and now i think it is finally time to let everyone in on a very big secret.

We plan to finally introduce something VERY NEW and VERY SPECIAL early next year which we have actually very slowly been developing for almost 3 years now.

It is Called the Faultmate Genesis and is some respects it could be considered a new and much cheaper system, that ultimately offers what our MSV-2 and FCR does, but at the same time it does not actually replace either, and in fact is a development that is more designed to significantly enhance and benefit the capabilities, flexibility and usability of both.

So it is an exciting development that truly benefits everyone.

Genesis is quite radical and complex, so i will try to explain as best i can the gist of how it works.

It is based upon our existing CAN BUS VCI 2 lead, that although costs about 80 GBP, actually has a very sophisticated Vehicle communication interface built into the OBDII plug with it's very own micro controller processor, own serial number and so on. This lead is of course already supplied with both the MSV-2 and FCR.

To use the Genesis system you would simply use that lead on it's own, (via a cheap 15 to 9 pin adapter for the MSV-2 version) and either plug it directly to a PC's serial port (or go via a USB to serial adapter). This PC will require to also be connected to the Internet.

Then you run a small host program on the PC that will be available for download from the Genesis web site, that will make a secure tunnel connection between the VCI2 and the web site.
You (or anyone your VCI 2 is approved for access to) then logs into the Genesis web site with a standard web browser, using any web enabled device, PC, Iphone, Ipad, Android device etc, from anywhere in the world or even from the same PC you are hosting the initial connection to the vehicle from.

Then in the browser, you get a menu of options and so on. Ultimately it is possible to do anything the MSV-2 can do if it were directly connected, and we have long since done all the regular CCF editing, enabling stuff and so on, in fact i did do a little private demo enabling the 4x4 info on a D3 from a nearby caravan when i was at Billing 18 Months ago, and we have done all re-flashing, but as it's an internet connection, we are having to build in disconnection safeguards and so on. so the Flashing is still not quite bullet proof enough yet for release. But it's real close and we will certainly be looking for Beta Testers next January.

It's very early days yet in some respects but if anyone has any questions i can answer i will try to answer what i can.

Merry Christmas to all

Pete,

are all the options of the MSV2 going to be available with the Genesis system? It is a very good idea as it brings a serious diagnostics tool within most peoples budget. Is it solely web based or is there a program, akin to vehicle explorer which acts as the interface client with the msv? Also will there be web based safeties to stop people accidentally writing or erasing stored values within the vehicle modules?
I will keep an eye on the msv forum for any info on this in regards to beta testing as I know BBS have there own pool of members to draw from in helping them test products. I would be interested in helping with the beta test as I already have the VCI lead. Let me know if I can be of assistance. Thumbs Up

Hi Pete,

Will you be able to do a remote tune if you were granted access to the link?

If so please bear me in mind - I've been a good boy all year and have saved for a remap.....

Regards

Keith

Hiya Brian

Now why am i not surprised that you should be the one to note the safety requirement Thumbs Up .

First off, yes, ultimately everything we can do with any Can Based Vehicle system can also be done on the Genesis system.

As you already appreciate, the MSV-2 is a tremendously powerful bit of kit, which can do much more than your basic diagnostic requirements. This is great in the hands of a competent user, who want's to explore and experiment and uses it carefully and correctly, however it is almost too powerful for some who can rush things and use it to get a bit out of their depth, possibly messing something up, which we appreciate is a concern for many.

However, the way we are typically providing the different functions for Genesis users is much more broken down and simplified into single button choices for all the most common requirements. There is also more raw capability like what you have now, however there is an Access control system and this sort of capability will only be accessible to those granted with a access rights to this.

For example even owning an MSV-2 might provide different access to those that do not Thumbs Up

We already have functions that only approved Beta Testers will see.

Because everything about Genesis is on line, we are now able to have a degree of flexibility regarding access and licensing at even the function level we could only ever once dream of.

For example an independent garage could now buy just 80 GBP's worth of hardware and MV licensing to read fault codes and reset service reminders an whatever models they wish, which was previously only possible with 300 GBP's worth of hardware and full MV licensing on multiple models which was prohibitively expensive.

The same of course goes for a private owner wanting to do just a few bits a bobs on their own vehicle.

However, although it is not that mind bendingly difficult to electronically connect to a vehicle and reprogram it's ECU's over an internet connection, as i demonstrated over 18 Months ago, this is really only the case when you have a guaranteed connection which although is true in most cases, sadly we have to cater for the possibility of disconnection at the worst possible moment.

So the system does indeed now do all it's own pre backing up and uses a variety of safeguard mechanisms and handling to hopefully ensure safe and bullet proof operation in any eventuality.

But then that's where Beta Testers, especially those with MSV-2's and the capability to locally pre back up CCF's etc will be invaluable and so i thank you for your offer to help Brian, i may well be in touch Thumbs Up

I know Colin, I'm Mr safety pants Laughing It is just that I have seen many a product get ridiculed due to the end users inexperience in using it, causing self inflicted problems which they then blame the tool manufacturer for. Rolling Eyes I know just how powerful the BBS diagnostic software is and that is why I am glad to hear there is safeties in place to stop inexperienced users from basically Censored up their Defenders ECU's. And the problems that could arise from the misuse of the FFL fill me with dread on the negative feedback that would be wrongly put out there, not to mention the poor sap with 30k worth of non moving metal. Whistle
The offer of help is a valid one on my behalf as I think this system will fill an empty gap in the market allowing users a very cheap way of getting into serious diagnostics on their vehicle. Especially when you consider most dealers charge 1 hours labour to plug their defender into IDS/DDS, it would pay for itself the first time you used it. Thumbs Up

Don't knock yourself regards your safety first thoughts Brian.
It is absolutely the right approach.

And it is certainly amazing how just one or two misunderstanding individuals can negatively affect something that would otherwise be of great worth and value to others.

Genesis is truly a great leap forward for everyone, and i will be very happy to have you on board as one of the first to try it out

But i must warn you. Even after having done this dozens of times, i still find it really very spooky to log into what is effectively a web site just like this one, especially from an Iphone or other, and see your vehicles VIN and other stuff presented like it was some default information or on line weather report and then simply by clicking some on line button, have something change in your vehicle as a result.

Just to check I've read this correctly, a one off £80 cost and no other charges ever and the £80 device can do all the stuff the £500+ one does?

Hi Pom,

I think that would be a tad optomistic, £80 per vehicle, (lead locks itself to a VIN) then there has to be a subscription fee, or a pay per view charge or something........

The licensing costs that will be involved with Genesis have yet to be decided, but i can tell you that this will definitely not be a vastly lower cost replacement for our existing equipment.

However, as i have stated, no longer does gaining even the minimal requirement to just read and clear Fault codes have to start with a 300 GBP outlay for hardware, followed by only the lowest possible software license available be everything, but for just your vehicle (SV).

The licensing possibilities for software capability on Genesis are much more diverse and flexible than what could be provided with the MSV-2, meaning you would only pay for exactly what you want and nothing more, and of course that new flexibility is also available to all existing BBS equipment owners who have a VCI 2 to further expand their equipments capability in every case.

The reality is that no matter what, Genesis is very much a truly massive technological leap forward that will ultimately benefit everyone, providing those too remote or unable to previously afford it, better than the kind of diagnostic capability they would have if they were at at a dealer and access capability akin to being parked in Pete's workshop.
