Mobile for you outdoorsy types
After breaking too many smart phones (even with tough cases) I was pretty excited to see this:

https://www.clove.co.uk/sony-ericsson-xperia-active

Got sick of waiting for Orange to officially bring it out (they take AGES then mess the phone up with branded cack) so bought one sim free.

Waterproof, shockproof, everything proof, filled with useful (for me anyway) GPS stuff for try/running training yet still with a decent processor, the latest Android OS and functionality, unlike stuff like the Samsung Solid, Motorola Defy, JCB phone, etc.

Should come tomorrow - thought it might be useful to some of you! Defender 110XS SW gone... now VW California 180 4 Motion.

I had a Land Rover phone, loved it, but was SO basic...had to go..

Alex (S4x4 owner) left his iphone4 on the scuttle of his D4, it slipped out going around a roundabout, realising what had happened, he stopped and got out the car to go pick it up off the road.
He watched in horror as 3 cars ran over it !!!
He picked it up and it was unmarked Shocked
( it was at this point I told him I had ran over it in the Ibex, he left it on the tyre whilst working on it !) So that's 4 cars over it Mr. Green

As for the waterproof phone...Yes please Thumbs Up

As a skydiver I was amused and amazed to see this a while back:

I will not however re-test the theory with my iPhone! Nick

Interesting. The spec says the GPS is "A-GPS" but it also suggests its standalone too. hmm, could be a useful thing.

And if you put "torque" on it and get yourself a bluetooth OBD2 key - voila, you have a device which can read your DTCs

Map not much use when you're in a sandstorm with zero visibiity, or a blizzard on a mountain with the same. "oh, I know, zag would get his map out, that's what we should do" Laughing Wink

I have got the Motorola Defy can i have more info on the "torque" thinggy please, and any more apps for the android please.
Its a pritty good tough phone glass scratch resistant screen ect but a pain in the arse to type anything on and if its raining or damp the screen wont work at all, it nearly went over the hedge the other day annoying in the extream !!! If everything is under control you are not going fast enough.

If you have an android phone, search for torque in the market. Looks pretty impressive to me!

NoWorries - the Active has a screen that can be used when wet - a major bonus! Should arrive tomorrow so will report back.

Another thing I like about it - its small. I'm bored of mobiles that are near tablet computer sized. Defender 110XS SW gone... now VW California 180 4 Motion.

Samsung are about to launch an 'Extreme' version of their Galaxy S2 phone, supposed to be rubberised and tougher than the standard version.

Arrived earlier - very impressed and it IS waterproof and you can type on a soaking wet screen.

A proper "pocket" phone too - the first I've had in about five years! Defender 110XS SW gone... now VW California 180 4 Motion.

I've had one for almost two years now - excellent phone.

I have a work supplied iPhone 4 as well for more functionality. John
