Sooo...other than the handbag-throwing, I think this is a really useful thread abot the pros and cons of accessory fitting
Some of the experienced guys (Brendan, MoG, Greeni, Zag etc) give newbies (me included) some really good advice & guidance, and I for one appreciate the guidance the forum gives (and some nice pics, thanks Ken). Hopefully I have also contrbuted a post that someone finds useful. So...any chance of a festive truce, and leave the handbags till next year??? On a positive note, I am now (note: just me) extra sure that I won't fit roof lights, bush cables, a winch or an unstable Hi-Lift (whatever one of those is). Also don't regret getting a soft-A-bar that can't take a winch. Will be fitting window grilles soon and I know I won't regret it as they are purely functional. The snow-cover is currently stopping snow from getting in and the raised intake...okay, so that's a bit naff (like it's owner). Oh it s not fair, I don't have a handbag Also I out grew dummies a few decades ago
Am I allowed off the naughty step yet? Life is not fair, then you die. It is all down to NEEDS and WANTS If you NEED to modify your vehicle so it is more suitable for your particular needs then that is fine! If you WANT to modify your vehicle and can afford to do so then that is down to your personal taste. Some modifications will not improve the vehicles capabilities as a 4x4. IMO large rims, low profile tyres are a waste of time and money and decreases the capabilities of a Defender, however if people want to do that then that is well sort of fine Serious head on now
Be careful about 12v/gas fridges. These are normally designed as caravan/camping fridges and not designed for a 4x4. If all you are going to do is drive on a tarmac road to a campsite, then take it out they will probably be fine. If you intend going on unsurfaced roads or offroad with one of those in the back I would suggest that it is not the most suitable type of fridges. Yes I could be accused of being biased etc and trying to sell a much more expensive fridge as we sell the ARB fridges. The ARB/Engel/National Luna fridges are designed to cope with the pitch and yawl of a 4x4 whereas the gas type are designed for level type of use. So please think carefully how you are likely to use the fridge, consider the long term use as well as just the next trip or two you may be planning Right back to the naughty step for me, discarding my serious head, it is quite comfortable really with a good supply of Belgium beer handy |

Me too! Interesting that the roof lights light-up the bonnet and cause glare (prob worse on a light colourred Defender?). Snow cover (I live in Aviemore - a ski resort - for a lot of the year), and driving lights (driving up single-track roads out in Northern Scotland in winter, with deer throwing themselves at your car) are still on my list of probable upgrades Defender "Puma" 2.4 110 County Utility (possibly the last of the 2.4's) |

Cheers for that, I had a feeling that there might be a downside, the plan was ,(generally) as you say, drive to campsite, pitch tent, make camp then go off road after, but last trip out to Pyrenees meant a fair bit of off road on several days whilst fully loaded, so maybe not the best choice. Need to look into the ones you mention but in the past have looked and thought a bit more cash than expected! But if they do the job then that's the way to go. I'm guessing its do do with the coolant having to be level? The only downside (apart from the outlay) with the 12v only ones is if you want to leave it at a semi permanent camp it can't be run (or can it?). Need more info on that before splashing out, all I need to sort out is some unbreakable eggs to go in it and we are good to go (yes I know they are mainly for beer and tonic water ) DJ 1989 200tdi 90 csw 2011 110 usw Orkney grey Buy British 🇬🇧 Defender Clothing Designs available at http://www.rangesports.com/acatalog/Defender-Stuff.html |

I can't believe some of the comments in this thread and the other "modification" thread from a few weeks ago, don't fit this, don't fit that, it's for looks, only for the serious off roader!! what a load of b*llocks!!!! you neigh sayers remind me of the "shiny blue crew" that were responsible for the (almost) collapse of the Discovery owners club a few years back....lets all shine our land rovers to within an inch of their lives . The reason we visit these websites is our love of landies, I don't want to come on this site and read that someone thinks I am an ar*e for fitting rooflights, or a snorkel or diff guards! for a newbie reading these posts I think "what a bunch of grumpy old men, paid too much for their over priced Puma's that they can't afford any mods? or too stuck up to associate themselves with the riff raff that drive around in muddy Defenders? I love the look of modded Defenders, I also love the look of a standard Defender straight off the forecourt, actually I just love Defenders, thats why I am here, why ridicule anyone for their preferences? I have lots of mods on my Defender and most of them are because I like the LOOK of them, some of them have come in very useful. I suppose I had better find a new site to visit as I am probably gonna get slaughtered now
Live & let live I say, each to their own, if you got nothing nice to say then say nothing at all!! |

Just to offer an alternative view on this, I have in the past used a 12v/gas fridge very successfully as a vehicle fridge. I mounted one in the middle of a Discovery for a trip to Morocco, which was run on 12v whilst on the move and on gas when camped overnight and it worked absolutely fine. That trip was definitely not just on tarmac. The only modification I made was to fit a small 24v computer fan (so it ran at roughly half speed) to the top of the heat exchanger to ensure air flow, as other things were packed around it. I've owned a National Luna fridge in the past too and that was excellent, but it was about 12 times more expensive than a 12v/gas one. If a trip is likely to be very taxing in the off-road stakes then the more expensive option is probably more appropriate, but it's not always necessary. Vehicle fridges can vary a lot in price.
OK have heard of people using 240v/12v/gas fridges in vehicles with varying degrees of success. The only experience of the 240/12/gas fridges I have is within caravans. Some of these fridges can be a PITA to light on gas if fridge is not exactly level. Stick one in a vehicle, take out at every campsite could also become a PITA if you were moving frequently. The 12v cool boxes are NOT to be recommended if you are running a single battery setup as they can drain a battery overnight. Remember the main priority of a vehicle battery is to start the engine! If you land up flattening your main/only battery you could be up the proverbial creek without a paddle. With the 4x4 fridges not all the numbers in the model reference actually refer to the volume of the fridges. Some have built in battery monitors, others not. So be careful when comparing fridges and prices. It is possible to hire 4x4 fridges so that might be a short term alternatives. Please consider your NEEDS first and your budget. If it is a one off trip for a week or so, I would say hire. If the one week trip is a precursor to a 6 months round the world trip I would suggest buying a decent 4x4 fridge. So carefully consider both your short term and medium term plans/needs Brendan |
