A couple of questions about our td5...
Now we have had the TD5 90 a week, there are couple of things that I need to know.

1. Sometimes we leave the dog in the car for a few minutes. Is it possible to lock and alarm the car, but without the interior sensors active? on my D3 I press the lock button twice to do this. Unfortunately, I need to get some new lock barrels for the doors, as the ignition lock seems to have been changed at some point, so until I have done this, locking with the key is impossible and I have to use the remote.

2. What additional security measures do people use? I am very aware that Defenders are a hot target for thieves. 2021 Defender 110 X-Dynamic HSE D300 MHEV

1. Get lock barrel replaced and lock with key. 2. Disklok , best steering lock on the market, as well as being highly visibil. Life is not a rehearsal!

Gareth - you do know that the ignition key and the door keys are different anyway?

You should have a long key with a black head (column), and a shorter metal-only key (doors).  1988 90 Td5 NAS soft top

Can't help on the alarm front sorry but having been a victim of car theft (some scum bag broke in and stole the keys for my VW Transporter and work car) I now have the factory fitted alarm, a toad catagory 1 alarm and imobiliser, a disk lock as well as a clutch claw on my TD5

The steering lock and alarms are fitted/activated evrytime I leave the landy.

The keys are now locked in a small safe when they'rein the house.

Horrible feeling to wake up and them not be there, so do everything I can to stop it happening again!

Martin, I have two black keys that start the car, 2 alarm fobs that lock unlock it, and 2 metal keys that undo the fuel cap.

The black ignition keys also lock/unlock the rear door. They fit into the door locks but won't turn them. The metal keys only do the filler cap, although they do fit the doors, but feel too small.

Wendy had a bit of an issue this evening when she finished work. She works at Lyme Park, it was very cold up there today. When she tried to get in, the front doors had frozen up and would not unlock at all with the central locking. She said it just locked itself again as soon as she unlocked it. This is when she discovered that the ignition key opened the rear door. 2021 Defender 110 X-Dynamic HSE D300 MHEV

The door locks may well be for the keys you have, it may that they've never been used, previous owners just relied on the remote and never put the key in the lock and the barrel is siezed from lack of use.

That is possible, they do feel like there is no movement whatsoever. I guess I will strip the door card off and have a look at the locks. I have searched and found that replacement barrels and keys are not expensive. 2021 Defender 110 X-Dynamic HSE D300 MHEV

Gareth, that's right for a post '02 model year TD5. Also, just locking with a key should leave the interior sensors inactive. Using the remote sets everything.

So, is the fuel cap key supposed to do the doors as well?

The pictures I have found for replacements look like the fuel cap key.

I have exactly this problem with my Td5 (55 plate). I can work the ignition and the rear door with one key, but have no others. The key will fit in the driver's door but will not turn. I assumed it was supposed to and that the barrel had seized?

My old Td5 (V-reg) had two separate keys, but the locks looked different and it had no central locking.

The fuel cap key is just for that, the ignition key should fit the door lock.

Before you strip it down I would give the lock a good dousing in wd 40 as it might just be seized due to lack of use.

My lock always freezes & I had to get in through passenger door & then struggled to lift up the lock mechanism.

They seem to collect water so you need to ensure a good dousing of a water repellant / lubricant to ensure easy operation.

regards locking with just a key you learn something new everyday Thumbs Up

extra security either steering disc lock or clutch claw or equivalent anything that makes it difficult to steal yours will encourage them to find easier pickings

Apologies with the mix-up about the keys, I thought they'd only very recently gone over to the ignition key working in the doors Embarassed  1988 90 Td5 NAS soft top
