What recovery company for trailers?
Who do you use to cover your trailer if it breaks down. I have called AA, RAC etc and they won't recover a 26' trailer with boat 2000KG all up!

Interesting one, Zag. I do a bit of towing as well, so it got me thinking.

I had a look at the LandRover website to see what the Assistance covers whilst under warranty, but it's not obvious.

The Green Flag site says:

Quote:
Your caravan or trailer will have the same cover as the Insured
Vehicle when being towed by the Insured Vehicle provided:
5.1 It fits a standard 50mm tow ball; and
5.2 It does not exceed (including any load carried) the following
gross vehicle weight: 3.5 tonnes and external dimensions:
7 metres in length (excluding any coupling device and tow
bar), 3 metres in height and 2.3 metres in width; and
5.3 The weight of the caravan or trailer when loaded is not
more than the kerb weight of the Insured Vehicle; and
5.4 It is of standard make.

The RAC Commercial Cover says:

Quote:
If the Commercial Vehicle should break down whilst towing a caravan or trailer We will recover Your Commercial Vehicle together with the caravan or trailer. However, if Your caravan or trailer breaks down in a way that means it cannot be repaired, We will be unable to recover Your caravan or trailer unless it can be recovered at the same time as Your Commercial Vehicle. If You require the broken-down caravan or trailer to be recovered separately We can arrange for this service but You will be responsible for any costs incurred. We would recommend that You always carry a serviceable spare tyre and wheel appropriate to Your Commercial Vehicle, caravan or trailer.

Whereas the non-Commercial (i.e. "normal") RAC policy says:
Quote:
We can also arrange for your caravan or trailer to be recovered but you'll need to meet any additional costs yourself.

I hadn't thought (or rather worried!) about this whilst towing before. Defender "Puma" 2.4 110 County Utility (possibly the last of the 2.4's)

Thanks for that Martin, I called LR Assist and they said they would not recover it. It's a bit of a problem some go through Britannica and others have had to join the caravan club to get cover. The big point is if your trailer breaks down will they recover it not if your vehicle breaks down and the trailer is OK to recover which has caught many out. The history with the AA is it depends who you speak to...

My trailer is about 25' and 2.4m wide and 2 tonnes all in which is causing problems with cover - will keep ringing around Thumbs Up

The width limit for trailers has been increased to 2.55 metres to bring it in line with the EU (relevant for me, my boat is exactly 2.5 metres).

And ADAC is the way to go: I drive abroad a lot and it works out cheaper for me than the RAC and AA, they don’t look for get-outs, and when my daughter broke down near Stansted she rang the German number and they liased with the AA.

Oh, and their centenary badge looks great on my Morgan!

As with any breakdown service, it depends on who actually turns up. I’ve never had anything but good service from the AA mechanics, but in the situation referred to, the motorway truck had already towed her to the Birchanger service area, when the “AA recommended” garage (finally) turned up, the mechanic didn’t even attempt to fix the car, simply said “oh well, you’re safe now, ciao”. I had to tow her car home with my Defender, huge detour ’cos couldn’t tow on the M11.

Thanks both, I'll look at ADAC properly tomorrow, said you had to reside in Germany to be a member which obviously isn't right so will give them a buzz Thumbs Up

I am with the Auto Club Europa, also a German club (their RAC as the ADAC is to the AA). Took out the cover while living over there but asked if it was a problem staying with them when I returned to the UK. They said not an issue as many of their members lived outside Germany. And true to their word it has not been a problem. I get my magazine posted to me every month, and even though I haven't had to use them I know that they are there if needs must. They cover me and my family for any vehicle we own or travel in, anywhere in Europe, anywhere around the Mediterranean (north Africa included), and north America. Time spent in any of these countries is not an issue and it comes in at under 60 euros a year. Some might find speaking to a German call centre a bit off putting but I bet their English is first class so should not be an issue.
