Engine oil consumption
Hi,

does anyone know an acceptable level of oil consumption for a L663 V8?

Mine used at times 1l/1k, 1l/2k, 1l/5k so all over the place.

Thanks for any thoughts.

Is that a reducing consumption trend over mileage from new? If so it could be improving as it gets run in.
Or is it random? And what is your total mileage now?
I don't do a lot of miles so haven't noticed any excessive consumption between services. 23.5MY 90 V8 Carpathian grey

Yeah I haven't noticed any meaningful oil consumption to be honest... Cheers, David

Hi there,

thanks for looking at this thread. Oil consumption/loss has been as follows:

* first 14,000km 6.2l
* next 3,000km 2.0l
* next 21,000km 4.0l
* no loss for 6,000km
* next 5,239km 2.0l
* next 13,600km. 2.8l

Cheers Defender 90 V8 MY23

That's pretty heavy consumption and I wouldn't be happy if that were mine.

Can't explain the variation though, that is quite strange.

Is the car still under warranty? 23.5MY 90 V8 Carpathian grey

Mate, that is NOT normal by any stretch of the imagination.

My RRS, which has the same engine, is on 117,000km and has NEVER consumed any oil.

There is something very wrong with yours, and you best get it seen to before the warranty expires. --

I agree and so far JLR has done nothing and Iโ€™m now in the process of dealing with this in a formal way ๐Ÿ˜‰ Defender 90 V8 MY23

using 17 litres of oil in 63,000 km - Surely it wouldn't pass any emissions tests?

Update Feb 2025
After some legal wrangling with JLR, a further testing procedure was agreed upon, which included driving the car for 1,610 km and then being examined.

I have engaged an expert car witness to attend the examination, and preliminary results are that the car used 1.5l engine oil over 1,7xx km. I regard this as unacceptable. More results (engine camera reading, oil sample analytics etc.) yet to come.....

I'll provide another update, as results come in.... Defender 90 V8 MY23

Update March 2025
The car has a major engine problem, which was identified during expert testing in liaison with JLR and requires a new engine.

This will now trigger certain options under the ACL (Australian Consumer Law) as I rejected the car already last year.

This has been recognized by JLR and "negotiations" are underway to avoid litigation with potential outcome such as this:

Update April - litigation
Hi Everyone,

not entirely unexpected, but after several deadlines, extensions, and offers JLR has

* not replied at all
* missed deadlines
* missed extensions provided
* not replied in any substantiated manner

This will now mean, that I will commence litigation. Once this information is publicly available, I will provide a link.

This case will be similar to:

https://www.austlii.edu.au/cgi-bin/viewdoc...mask_path=

and the subsequent cost ordered against JLR:

https://www.austlii.edu.au/cgi-bin/viewdoc...mask_path=

all totalling > A$ 680,000.

Next update once filing is complete. Defender 90 V8 MY23

Update April - Litigation II
Due to JLR's unresponsiveness, legal proceedings and an urgent hearing request have been lodged in the local tribunal.

My urgent request was granted, and the first pre-trial hearing is scheduled for early May.

This will now become a significantly more expensive exercise (for them).

Next update in May.

PS: picking up some last personal belongings from my car at their workshop, I talked to a service person there and we chatted away. As I previously offered to settle the matter by upgrading to an Octa I asked about any Octa already in AU, which he reflected not yet. However, interestingly, he shared that from overseas, there are increasing reports of oil loss and lower oil levels in the OCTA, which is not uncommon with the BMW engine..... Defender 90 V8 MY23

No worries Pickles.

One thing I forgot to mention is that there is another case at the local tribunal against JLR with a hearing date set for 28/04. Not sure about details but it is in the local judicial database with hearing next Monday ๐Ÿ™ˆ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ™ˆ Defender 90 V8 MY23
