Spare ECU for trip
We are planning for a trip to south America end of next year. We want to ship our cars to Buenos Aires and travel to the south and then up to Lima and drive back to Buenos. I am driving a Puma 110 and the other defender will be a fully restored Tithonus with a 200 tdi engine.

One of the worries I have is the ECU.
Can i take a spare ECU with me?
Does anyone know what a spare costs.
Is changing in the field without programmer computers possible?

Any other suggestions on this subject?

Buy a nanocom if your planning that journey. I dont know how much a spare would cost but may be worth while if you really are in the middle of nowhere. Most problems you will be able to sort out using a nanocom though.

First off- Is the Puma within warranty? If so, get a list of all LR dealers in the countries you are visiting with addresses and phone numbers- that way, if anything goes wrong they will get it sorted.

How many people have had problems with ECU failure? I haven't hear of any,

Get a Nanocom....... as mentioned, most problems can be investigated/ rectified this way.

I have a device to read and clear faults (blackbox).

Warranty or not. (My Defender is from 2007) If we have a problem if there is a dealer we will go there. (There are not much dealers in Chile, Peru or Bolivia)

The decision to take a spare ECU for me is based on the next factors:
* Can we repair it? No
* Can we do without? Unfortunatly not
* it isnt heavy and doesn't take a lot of room.

No need to take a spare ECU with you.

Better to take spare suspension components like shocks etc, spare prop, UJs

Or just take a tow rope so the 200tdi can pull you along Whistle

I think the point I am trying to push is that in the past 3 years I have never heard of an ECU fail on a Puma. The space it takes up (quite a lot by the time it is packed and waterprofed) could be better off taken up by parts that are more likely to fail (vac pump, clutch, wheel bearings etc).

Suspension spares: Check, one front and one rear, usable on both cars.
Wheel bearings: Planned to change them (around 100k km) 10k km before big trip. There will also be an extensive service.
Clutch, prop-shaft bearings, vacumepump are planned to take with me as spare.
EGR will be closed soon.

I know that the almost never fail, but if it does during the trip..... It will be a problem.

Almost all other things are serviced by ourself one time or the other. This gives me some confidence. (except for the ECU).

And behind the 200tdi for more than 15k km is not a very good idea.

Don't worry about spares. I've ridden a motorbike to some pretty remote places and I took the bare minimums.

Just remember that DHL/Fed Ex can have a parcel usually to anywhere in the world within 24 hours. You have another vehicle so the chance that both break down is limited meaning you can get to at least a town witha postal service.

That's right.

Leaves me with the last remark. For changing the ECU i think you need a computer to program it. (or not?) So sending one with fedex will not work.

I can see why you want to take a spare with you, though you will need a diagnostic tool to set up certain parameters if the need arises to swap out the ECU. As far as costs go I would be looking for a secondhand one from a scrappies, as a new one will be expensive from the dealers. Also the second hand one will have the software installed already from its previous vehicle. Not sure if the new ECU from LR will be blank meaning it needs to be flashed with the operating software, fuel files.
If you need to swap over the ECU then you will have to do the following, first to get it to start and then running. DDS learn on the 10AS, so the EMS can communicate with the 10AS via the IC for mobilisation code. If this doesn't happen the engine will not start as the immobilizer disables the starter and injector circuits. Pilot correction learn, the four injector hex codes will need to be learned in the new ECU. Fuel pump learn and several other house keeping tasks (a lot to list) all to get the new ECU working.
If you go down the road of carrying a replacement ECU remember you will also need to take a diagnostic tool capable of getting it synced to your Puma. You could also just carry a spare ECU and hope one of the garages nearby has the means to install it.

I don't know about the Puma, but for a Td5, you'll need a nanocom type device to make the *new* ECU learn the alarm settings...

Having said that, I don't know if the ECU learns the alarm, or the alarm learns the ECU....

If the ECU learns the alarm then you could get one pre-set before you leave.

I'mk sure the likes of Alive tuning would assist here.

I don't believe you'd need a spare ecu. The Puma management system is built far better, and significantly more watertight than the Lucas Td5 management.

I really wouldn't bother.

With a Td5 you can program the spare ECU before the trip and when you have a problem just swap it. Isn't that a case with the Puma? Roel
