Whining sound in tune with rpm
Hi all!

Im new user from Estonia and battling with a strange issue. Couple weeks ago i noticed a strange whine has come together with engine sound and now it’s gone worse. Sounds like hydraulics but nothing doesn’t change when turning the wheels, so I suspect it’s not the power steering unit.

My car has TD5 engine.

Tomorrow have a meeting at mechanics (he’s not a Landy guy) but I’m asking your opinions what it could be, as maybe someone will recognize the sound and can direct mechanic/me to the right direction.

Video with the sound mentioned:

All opinions are appreciated.

Thanks!

Hi and welcome.

Could it be something as simple as a bearing on a pulley?

Does it make the noise when the vehicle is not being g driven?

Best of luck 👍

Thanks for the input. Yeah the sound comes in correlation with rpm, doesn’t matter if car is stationary or driven.

Sounds like it will be one of the serpentine belt driven items. Alternator, tensioner, pump, ac.

Remove fan and belt. Test. Then hand spin each item as see how it feels/sounds.

Thanks for all the opinions. I’ve removed the belt and noise stopped. One pulley was not rotating freely.
Next step is to order the idler pulley, tensioner pulley and belt. Let’s hope that solves the case, if not, then next step is the alternator or power steering unit.

I guess the correct code for TD5 no ACE and no A/C is ERR6658.

Will keep you posted.

Glad you’ve found the culprit. An easy enough job to do.
I had the same issue a number of years ago.

Be careful as I bought a ‘cheap’ replacement pulley that sounded just as noisy - upon inspection the bearing was cheap and poorly fitted. I then bought an OEM replacement and it was sorted. Unfortunately I can’t remember the brand of the first replacement part but I can’t emphasise enough how poor the quality was. Comparing the two was night and day.

What’s that saying…buy cheap buy twice!

Excellent, good and quick diagnostics have you homing in on hopefully a quick fix.

If you are on a tight budget (or are just tight) on the the steel idlers you can replace the bearings. Not sure by heart on the Td5, but on the Rover V8s I keep the old ones and they can be fitted at the right application as they are quite univeral. In fact I fitted one on my ride-on lawnmower last year.

Idler pulley and tensioner bearings can definitely be replaced. At least if you do this you can choose a high quality bearing so hopefully get some more longevity.

The bearing at the rear of the alternator, which supports the front of the vacuum pump can also fail. 1990 Defender 110 200TDI Camper - now converted to Td5 power

I've changed two idler pulleys, tensioner pulley and the belt. Problem solved and no more whining. Thanks guys for the ideas and support.

I bought new items and did not change the bearings itself.

Part numbers for future references:
ERR6951 (DAYCO) 73€
ERR6658 (ALLMAKES) 55€
PQS101490 (LR Genuine) 12€
ERR6493 (ALLMAKES) 84€

Now heard a new noise that comes from engine fan visco clutch. Intermittent crackling every 2-3 seconds. Will change that too.
