Hi – I am new to this site but have been reading it for some time and find it very informative. Anyways just thought I would share with you the problems that my recently purchased 90 (08 model) has been giving me. Firstly I had the lovely experience of the cabin filling up with a smell of burning and then it started to judder as I went though the gears. Thought it needed a new clutch but thankfully it didn’t. That problem just seemed to disappear when I had a mechanic look at it. Then the engine management light came on – brought it to the dealer and they told me there was a recall on my model something to do with the handbrake – that was fine LR fixed and paid for that but it also needed a new ECG valve again this was replaced and was covered under warranty – I have had it back for I would say about 3 weeks now and yesterday the TC and ABS lights decided to grace me with their presence – going back to dealer to get resolved (hopefully) - again this will be covered under warranty (which runs out in 2 weeks). I also noticed that it does not like first or second gear which is a problem when driving in heavy traffic but maybe all Defs are like that. Im losing confidence in it but am hoping (praying) that these are just “teething” problems that will eventually come right. I have always loved the defender and was so delighted to eventually own one but now my joy is quickly diminishing due to these problems.
Anyways hopefully all will be resolved sooner rather than later as I don’t ever want to drive anything else - although at the moment i am being forced to! Will keep you updated of its progress. N |

Make sure you tell LR about your problem with the gears and get one of there technicians to test drive it and point out the problem.....also get it in early for a M.O.T and if they find anything then you can get it done under warranty

Thanks for the welcome guys - love the site. Bringing the Def to dealer next monday and will ask them to do a full check on it and will also get an early service done on it - its going for NCT in January (all irish reg cars need to do one once 4 years old) so that will show up - i presume - any other problems. Fingers crossed it will be a happy ending.

I have an 08 Puma and there is no problem with first or second gear. First gear is very low so if you engage first and rev and take off quickly it will lurch. Had a clutch replaced under warranty due to a slight rattle on turnoff-this was the clutch springs. Some handbrakes were binding owing to a misshapen drum but I never heard of one smoking. Check the engine bay for spilt oil which will burn off and smell. Never had any bother with the EGR. I don't have TC or ABS so I cannot comment.
The juddering sounds like something sticking like a handbrake drum after it gets warm. It might have cooled down before your mechanic got near it. 1982 88" 2.25 diesel 1992 110 200tdi csw -Zikali 2008 110 2.4 tdci csw-Zulu 2011 110 2.4 tdci csw-Masai |

Hey spudfan - thanks for response - i will mention to dealer the burning issue (although thankfully it has not reappeared)- The first and second gears are just very rough and it feels like im running the life out of the engine perhaps this is normal i don't know, the clutch is extremely heavy like im driving an articulated truck again i will mention all these matters to dealer and see what they say/suggest.

Welcome Def Dub,
I noticed a rattle when in low range when my foot was off the accelerator and the defender was pulling itself along. I also had "clunky" first and second gears which all turned out to be the clutch. Make sure you get it checked ou t before the warrenty runs out. Luke 2008 110 XS CSW Stornoway Grey |

Welcome!
We've had every problem under the sun with ours but all sorted under warranty. Some of the early Puma parts were poor - soft clutches, single rather than double sealed brake vacuum pumps, etc. Once sorted, you should hopefully be okay! They do need a bit of extra patience and tlc over many anonymous Jap boxes but they are sooooo much better! Defender 110XS SW gone... now VW California 180 4 Motion. I love them all and have done for many years, and now probably owned all the series or used them in angry stuff.........they make me smile, and that's what is important. Yes they have glitches, but so does everything in life.
If you stop smiling buy a KIA and then tell me you feel you are in a hand built motor with history |

Hi guys thanks for the advice - it makes me feel better that others who have had similiar and other problems have been overcome. Totally agree - a Defender is for life - I know they have their problems but they are worth it - will be very sad when the stop making it in its current incarnation - will be hanging on to mine forever!
