Defender 35 inch tire on stock wheels
Hi guys! Planning to upgrade from 33 bfgkm3 to 35” bfgkm3 tires soon, Just wondering if it’s a must to swap stock wheels for 35 inch tires to be fit correctly? I really like the look of stock wheels (it can be sawtooth, svx or boost alloys) has anybody here run 35 inches tires with stock wheels that can show a picture? I will have 30mm spacers and the correct suspension lift in order to fit the tires, just wondering about the wheel situation, thanks!

That depends on the width of the tyre, rather than the diameter. Hard to give a useful answer unless you tell us the actual size you're proposing.

There are those who have fitted 285s on standard (7") alloy rims but it is a stretch and not really recommended, although 255s are OK on 7". I very much doubt that you are going to find a 35 tyre which isn't wider than a 285, so I suspect that the answer will be "no".

35/10.5/16 will fit on a 7” rim. Although depending on tread pattern spacers or wide offset rims are required.
Fitting on a 7” rim allows you to air down more than on an 8” rim without bead locks.

Even if you can squeeze it on, you will definitely need spacers trying to run a tyre that wide on a 7 inch standard rim as you will have very little steering lock before rubbing.

I ran 35s but on a 10x16 wheel with ET-32 offset (60mm more than a standard wheel).

BFG say 8" wide rim for most of their 34"+ tall tyres.

35's may also impact acceleration and braking. And add higher risk of breaking axles & diffs. Not saying you shouldn't, but it is hugely unlikely that you need tyres that size.

Offset and rim width will vary, it isn't 1 to 1 when comparing, so saying you have 60mm more offset, means very little if the rim is 4.5" wider anyhow.

Thanks for your answer! I’m aware of all the mechanical things that need to be done in regards to properly run 35” tires, my only wonder is in regards of the wheel itself

Scroll to the bottom of the page for the sizes charts.

8.0 -11.0” is the size range.

They will probably physically fit a 7” rim but look quite tight/bulging. Some tyre fitters may refuse. And depending on what country you are in it may or may not be illegal for road use.

Standard alloys are +33ET offset. Which will help to keep the tyres in the arches more so (it’s illegal in the U.K. for tyres to stick out). But will massively reduce your turning circle. Most wheel spacers are 30mm so will you effectively +3ET offset.

You do not state which vehicle you have. So just highlighting that if it’s a Puma and within a certain vin range (with a non friction welded front axle ) the front axle is prone to failure. This issue will be compounded by the larger , heavier tyres fitted to wheels with an offset that causes them to protrude more.
