Hard to start
Hello Forum members,

I replaced the battery a year ago and starting up my TD5 was a breeze until the last few days... Now it takes a lot of tries for the engine to start and when it does it gives up a lot of smoke.

It then runs fine until the next restart... The battery seems strong... What might it be?

Best

Hi

Sounds as if your glow plugs need replacing.

Try priming the fuel system before a start , and see if the results are the same or better.

You can test your glow plugs in situ with a multi meter, should be circa 0.9 Ohm for each glow plug

Also check your glow plug relay.

A good TD5 should not need glow plugs, i would suspect fuel pump or pressure regulator if its a fuel issue. Crank sensor is a possibility maybe??

Battery ground loose, possibly, hence why it’s happened apparently suddenly.

If you have a long enough one, run a jump lead from the connected battery ground lead, to the engine block.
See what that does, if it solves the issue it’s ground, if not then the glow plugs might be failing.

I’d have thought if it was the starter it’d either pack up, or be running. TheThunder Rolls🇬🇧🇺🇸

Alot of tries being alot of cranks?

Does it do it everything? Or only certain times? First start of day, any cold start etc. Cheers

Thank you everybody...

What is the difference between try and cranK? I turn the key and the starter does its job without the engine starting or starting and dying immediately... then eventually the engine starts with a lot of smoke.

First time of the day but also after having driven it for half an hour or so.

Thanks

I think people are asking if it keeps turning over, but the engine doesn’t start, or do you turn key and the engine doesn’t turn over.

Have you tried a fuel pump prime procedure before starting. This will show if you are getting air into the fuel system

The engine does turn over but does not start, then it does but does not stay on... then eventually it does... I think the smile is white.
I'll try the prime procedure this w/e.

Thank you!
