The TD5 "left turn groan"
Hi All

It seems that quite a few TD5s have a 'groan' in the steering, only at low speed or stationary, and only when turning left. It sounds a bit like an old iron gate with rusty hinges closing. Right turns at low speed or stationary are silent, as are left turns at higher speed.

Doing a search, it suggests that this isn't uncommon, it's a resonance 'somewhere' within 'something' - but has anyone ever got to the bottom of what actually causes it? Cos it's blooming annoying!

PAS fluid levels are fine, can't see that it's anything major as it only ever makes a noise in one direction!

Jon

The box is telling you need s a rebuild. If its not leaking just keep driving it. Mine has groaned for about five years. Thumbs Up 2010 Range Rover MkIII Autobiography Super Charged (Idris)

As far as I am aware, the box is only a few years old, although it was a recon one fitted by the previous owner.

From searching on here and some of the other forums, some owners TD5s have done it from new, but I've not been able to find out if it's the box itself, or something else (pump / pipework etc) resonating..

Is it not one of the pipes resonating? I forget which one now but there was a reroute or new pipe for early td5s. Cheers

I’d consider changing the PAS fluid, I expect it’s ancient.

Very often hardly gets changed, it’s often long life, but still, it’s possible it’s gone hydroscopic. TheThunder Rolls🇬🇧🇺🇸

It's a 2003 so not that early, but worth looking into - thanks..
