Thanks Munchie, ahhhhhhhh it’s all over for me and the Defender dream. I can’t justify almost 5k for a years Rd tax. Thanks again everyone for your advice. |

This is pushing up value of second hand defender.
I have palyed with my registration on the WBAC platform, and at the moment the virtual offer is 1.5k more than what I paid the car a year ago. So it’s probably not the best month to make a good deal with ordering new defender. Dealers know that and at this point even 1100 discount seems reasonable in this scenario. Got mine with 7% off a year ago. Now this is not achievable I understand. |

Hi Crazymind,
Yeah I can see a few people like me refusing to pay nearly 5k for the first years tax. It’s almost 10% of the cars value. I’ll maybe wait a few months and see what happens. I’m gutted as thought I had a chance of getting a Defender but seems a pipe dream. I will look at used right enough but the 11.9% means I’m paying the same deposit and the same monthly amount for a car that is 4 years old. Just doesn’t make sense to me. Oh well…..looks like me and my Seat Tarraco will remain friends for a while longer. |

To be totally honest and realistic, you were looking to take on £60,000 of debt with a 10% deposit, and 8 to 10 years to pay it off! On top of that there's the upkeep and running costs of a premium brand SUV that will have some big bills during that time. Just to be left with a 10 year old diesel car at the end of it. Buy the best Freelander 2 you can find outright with the cash, then save the £700 per month finance cost for something worthwhile. https://www.autotrader.co.uk/car-search?so...1238337730 |

I see your perspective, and long-term costs are definitely worth considering. However, there’s also value in the experience of owning and using the car during those years. Life is unpredictable, and in 10 years, circumstances, needs, and priorities may be completely different. While financial prudence is important, there’s also something to be said for enjoying what suits you now rather than making decisions purely based on where you might be a decade from now.

Yeah I can see both thought processes but I would really like a defender. I also stay on a farm (not my farm) and the farm Rd that leads to my steading can get a little scary at times in winter so a defender ticks the boxes. I am also very tall at 6ft 8 and don’t have my pick of cars that I feel comfortable in. The Defender has loads of room for me.
I am looking at a 21 plate with about 35k miles and it’s a D250 full service. Do you think it’s safe to purchase a 4 year old Defender with a 12 month warranty? |

So far the defender has proven to be the best Land Rover Products in terms of reliability.
I was also talking to a Friend recently about the perceived robustness of the car. I can certainly say it can take a certain amount of abuse with no consequences. One above all is the suspension geometry. I was constantly adjusting it every 4/5 months with previous Land Rover products. Off road, on road, fully loaded, heavy towing. No problem, still goes straight as day one and all the tyres with even wear. First in 30 Years of off roading and motoring 🤣 . The clever low range box is usable on tarmac to manoeuvre like no other heavy duty off road. It really feels undestructible. Would I be confident to buy a 4 years old defender? Yes I would. I would be buying a 4 years old Range Rover with suspicion. I think the defender has been cleverly designed in the very relevant department: suspension, gearbox and reliability with in minde the 6 inline diesel . The hybrid… just a marketing product… |

That’s sound advice crazymind. I appreciate that.
I’m currently humming and hawing and looking at ways I can afford it better. Small things like getting in white help reduce the cost ever so slightly. I’ve yet to hear anyone speak badly about the car even those unfortunate ones that have had bother have an affection for the car. Just wish it was even a few grand cheaper and I’d put my deposit down. |

Not wishing to put the dampers on things, but if its tight buying and running a Defender, is it worth the stress?
I did something odd, as far as many are concerned, and went from a new Defender D250, that I bought outright in 2022, to a 9 year old Discovery 4. ![]() Why? Because I hated the rear door, lack of a decent boot and just general practicality. Having said that, I did love the Defender to drive, did 36,000 miles in it including 8 trips to Milan, but in reality the Discovery is pretty close to drive. Do I miss my Defender no. I did look at a new D5 and 130 but the D5 was too Mumsnet and the 130 still had the rear door issue but gained a bigger boot but it just wasn’t as practical as a the D4 and it also had the issue of overall length to contend with. If it was me, as much as the Defender is a cracking car, I wouldn’t push myself financially to get one if it’s not something you need for its abilities. Eiger Grey MY23 D250 SE with bits. Stop moaning about the practicality of the defender
![]() ![]() The interior of the disco 4 is posh. I would never wish to get with my muddy boots in the disco 4. No worries in the defender. And when I wash the car I pressure wash the the floor as well. If this is not practicality someone explain ito me what it is! It’s the most kids bomb proof interior of anything, pretty much like a van. Farmers don t buy it because of the pricing…but it would take a lot of beating without worries. |

![]() My cars get used. No pavement princesses here. ![]() I’ve had many D3/4 and they were used as they were intended, as was my Defender, but there’s no getting around the fact that D3/4 is the best LR ever made...... ![]() ![]() Click image to enlarge ![]() Click image to enlarge ![]() Click image to enlarge ![]() Click image to enlarge ![]() Click image to enlarge ![]() Click image to enlarge ![]() Click image to enlarge ![]() Click image to enlarge ![]() Click image to enlarge ![]() Click image to enlarge ![]() Click image to enlarge Eiger Grey MY23 D250 SE with bits. I wanted a Disco4 but couldn't find a low mileage, in good condition with lrsh near to me so opted for a new Defender 110, we have dogs. A few weeks ago a mint low mileage 65 plate hse was traded in at Landrover Nottingham for a new Defender. I bought the disco 4 knowing 1st March , just one week later, I had a new 110 Defender coming again from Nottingham. The Disco4 is a great car, more practical, but it doesn't drive like a Defender which is closer to driving a normal car due to its chassis. The Defender is the style car to be seen in but the Disco4 is, in the right soec, still a great place to be. The wife prefers the Disco4 as it is light and airy and feels plush. I like the 110. Had I bought the Disco4 beforei ordered the 110 I doubt I would have bought the 110 and saved over 80k in the process. Apologies to post this in the discount thread. |

Why did you bother with a disco? You should have gone straight to a Vw transporter 4x4!
