Put it in diff lock with handbrake on. Jack up the offending corner and holding the wheel at 9 o'clock and 3 o'clock try to rock it from side to side to feel for play in the wheel bearings.
Chock the other 3 wheels securely, take the handbrake off and spin that wheel by hand. It should spin freely without any roughness or resistance. Graunching sounds usually indicates a wheel bearing breaking up inside the hub. Let's hope it's not that. HTH Mo The Land Rover 90 - Many are called, few are chosen. 50 Shades of Pennine Grey |

Couple mm? Pull the drive flange and look at the splines on the flange and axle. One of mine was worn down to almost nothing. I changed both axles and all my drive flanges. Much quieter now.

Update - I don’t think that the noise is coming from the rear O/S wheel now. It sounds more towards the centreline of the vehicle. I’m starting to think that it could be the shoes or gubbings in the handbrake?
Anyone else had any strange vibrations or noise from their handbrakes? Jim |

Drama over! I had my neighbour drive the Landy while I laid in the back with my ear to the floor. Found that it was the exhaust pipe occasionally touching the removable crossmember just under the gearbox. A quick adjustment has now cured what I was dreading was going to be an expensive job

I'd still check those rear shafts/drive members omif 2mm play. Cheers

I did recheck the rear half shafts and drive flanges. I was a little out on my 2mm estimation
![]() There is some slight movement which I’m not overly concerned about. I did grease up the end of the half shafts as they were bone dry… Jim |
