Sounds very much like it’s an issue with one or more of your glow plugs, your glow plug fuse , glow plug wiring or glow plug relay.
A search on here on “glow plugs” will bring up many topics on testing and glow plug replacement on a 2.4 |

No idea on glow plugs history only had the vehicle 9 months. The battery isn’t the best and it’s done 77k. I’ll check post for glow plugs testing thanks

Sounds like there’s your issue. New battery will sort most of your issues. 2008 2.4 110 Utility Station Wagon XS.

What the OP says seems fairly normal for a 2.4.

Mine was like that the other day, and is quite normal like Blackwolf’s says.
Glow plugs might be getting on a bit, that might be it, or battery on its way out, but other than that. We have had some really cold weather lately, I’ve see -7.C in the last 10 days, which batteries aren’t too keen on. TheThunder Rolls🇬🇧🇺🇸 ⛽️🛢️⚙️🧰💪 |

As you 2.4 owners/ experts say, it’s probably normal. With the 2.2 its different. 2.2 owners don’t have that problem unless a glow plug or very low battery is the issue. Plus a Nanocom can identify which glow plug is at fault, no doubt as the 2.2 has a glow plug ECU.

I had same problem this winter with my MY2010 2.4 125,000 miles
Just had all four glow plugs changed - No4 was completely shot, it took the mechanics a few hours and significant heat to shift it - not a quick or easy job. 130 Puma HCPU with an Artica 240LR Demountable Camper |

On my 2.2 I used plus gas with an extended straw to get the release agent onto the glow plug threads. I did this each day for a week before I went for removal. I then used a torque wrench set to the tightening torque of the glow plugs to undo the plugs, that way i would not risk snapping the glow plugs. You then loosen, tighten, loosen more, tighten, etc etc and they then wind out. One potential issue is carbon build up on the tip of the glow plug, that can stop the plug from being removed. So if that’s the case some carb cleaner fed onto the glow plug can help.
In essence you just need to go slow and methodically and they eventually come out. Last edited by Ianh on 4th Mar 2025 11:50pm. Edited 1 time in total |

Hah! -7C and we take our clothes off and run around naked! I can confirm that a 2.4 in good condition will start at -30C without being plugged in. Sweet Mother of Pearl, it's not happy and it is a bad idea, but it will do it. I can also confirm it will be a pig to start at -5C if your glow plugs are all shot. Fit a block heater or a Webasto Thermo Top and use them when it is cold. When it is really cold, -20C or lower, I have the following: - Webasto Thermo Top run for 45 minutes before starting - Webasto Air Top run for 45 minutes before starting - oil pan heater plugged at least 3 hours before starting - battery heater plugged at least 3 hours before starting - 12v heater in the breather pipe - 12v 50W heater wrapped around the engine breather oil separator - 12v 100W heater wrapped around the fuel filter My next project is fitting heated wiper blades as they freeze up even with a heated windshield. I have also got to say that I am impressed with the 2.4 heating system. I get HOT air out at -30C. To achieve that, I fit my own heater valve and viciously back flushed the heater core.

No surprise- Puma heaters were sourced from Toyota
Td5 struggles at zero and is ineffective at anything below freezing, night and day better now I have fitted a Eberspacher between the front seats |

I had the same problem on my MY09 Puma this winter, as it turns out, 3 out of 4 glow plugs were shot! “A Land Rover immobilized is a moral defeat for the driver and bad publicity for the vehicle, […] it's up to you to do justice to your Land Rover!” - Land Rover Driving Technique.

I’ve seen this a few times with mine, I just put it down to it being a defender… sounds like it’s worth me checking the glow plugs!
Prior to owning a defender I didn’t own tools for working on cars…… 😂 2009 Stornaway Grey Puma Build Thread |
