Defender td5 90 rear inward facing seats
Hi guys,

I've done some searching but struggling to find anything.

I'm hoping to fit some inward facing seats on our 90 TD5. Currently there are bench seats and hoping to take these out to put in 4 inward facing ones.

I've contacted my insurance company today - Aviva and they have confirmed all fine so long as they are safe & that a certificate of conformity by DVSA can be issued..... I'll hopefully get that sorted...

The real question is... How on earth do I fit them, absolutely clueless! Does anyone here have a guide / tips? What size bolts? Is it a mammoth of a task?

Appreciate any help

Hi, fitting the seats isn't too bad a job, each seat bolts down onto the horizontal surface of the wheel well and you will have to drill and use Rivnuts (or similar) to fix the back rest to the body capping. You will need an assistant to secure the bolts through the wheel well unless you have arms like Mr Tickle.

Seat belt anchors are very important, these need to be robust so you would be wise to have a look at the parts diagrams to see what is involved - there are a lot of parts involved in seat belt anchorage, it's not just a case of bolt them to the floor and hope. An example from the parts diagrams below

My advice would be find a 90 already equipped with inward facing seats and have a very good look at how they are fitted and then decide if this job is viable. You may find used kits of parts online if someone is changing their arrangement.

Are you sure you'll be able to fit four forward-facing seats and their occupants (however small) in the back of a 90?
EDIT - ignore me, I can’t read, thought it said forward facing.

The 4 individual inward facing seats used to be offered by landrover as an option on the county models I believe.

We certainly used to have a 90 with the individual foldup seats.

Exmoor trim do a couple of variants, if your pockets are deep enough.

You would also need the seatbelt kits

The seat backs hook into the body capping's at the top so that gives you the initial positioning, The bottom of the back rest has to be positioned so that the angle of the backrest has a reasonable rake not too vertical. The bases should align with the backs but be mounted in a position where they have enough clearance to be folded up. Land Rover provided a longitudinal mounting bar which provided strength to the body for seat belt anchorages. However the effectiveness of side facing seatbelts leaves much to be desired.
