Twisted 16” ET0 wheels. Tyre question.
Evening all,

I have managed to find a set of my dream wheels. 16” twisted sports ET0.
My question is, will a 235/85 fit on them as well as a 265/75 ?

Cheers Smile 2008 2.4 110 Utility Station Wagon XS.

Offset will have no impact on tyre width or size in terms of fitting the rim. Do you know what width the rims are? I'd guess either 7 or 8"?

BFG recommend 6.0-7.5" for a 235/85. They would likely look rather stretched on an 8" wide rim.

Yes they will fit, but may stick out of the arches, which is illegal in the UK. They will also throw more mud up the sides and over the door handles.

Not saying you shouldn't, but they may not be the best size overall. On UK terrain a narrow tyre will generally perform better.

A 255 or 265 would also work perfectly fine on an 8" rim too.

Looking down from above, the tread is covered by the wheel arch, although the sidewalls do protrude.

Most of my time is road work, but you're correct when in the mud it does throw up some impressive s**t up the sides.

Advantages are that with some side bars they don't look too big and the tyres and bars are the widest part of the car, no car park knocks, no-one parks too close, etc

Probably absolutely fine - the main disadvantage is that Land Rover never extensively tested anything wider than 265 on 7J for the Ninety and 235 on 7J for the 110 so the steering and suspension was optimised for these tyre sizes

I can agree with some of your statement - "Land Rover never extensively tested anything" - If left at this then most of the failing axles, clutches, gearbox adapters, etc. etc. can be explained!

I think some of the electric board 110's were on 285 muds and running at or over max GVW, we certainly had a couple of contracts which were supplied with HD chassis, 285's on 8 spokes (?) from the factory to convert into pumping appliances.

I've run 285's for over 15 years / 230k km and wheel bearings are still original and with 0 offset lock is good.

It is my opinion that extensive testing ended with the TD5, after that it was a case of just enough to get the vehicle into the showroom. Unfortunately during the Puma era there was a raft of senior decision making management within JLR who had never ever driven a classic Defender, had no intention of doing so and had their eyes fixed firmly on its eventual replacement. A case in point was the availability of a Puma replacing Ford engine that would meet up-coming emissions regs and keep the Defender in production up to (and beyond) the introduction of of the L663

Yes buddy, it’s been a bit of a rollercoaster of emotions deciding whether to get something more family friendly or not. I just couldn’t bring myself to sell it. She’s a keeper. 2008 2.4 110 Utility Station Wagon XS.
