Been away from "proper" landrover ownership for a while, for the last 10 years I have owned a V8 Discovery 3 which left the drive last week (I'm on the D3 forum as "Bungle" but that username was already taken here), but previously owned a 1985 2.5 petrol 110 for 8 years and drove a 130 300TDI for quite a while for a charity so I am no stranger to them. The D3 had to go as the ever increasing bills could not be justified for the small mileage I was going to be doing. Decided that in slow time I would look for a 110 200TDi (always preferred them to the 300) with galvanised chassis and bulkhead, needs to be a station waggon to accommodate the children. The idea being repair bills would be lower than the D3 (yes yes, stop laughing at the back) and it would cope with being used less often better than the D3 (which really really hates being parked up for more than a week).
I assumed it would take some time to find this fairly specific specification, but blow me the next week a friend sent me a link, in fact it was one I had seen before but at the time the price was a bit steep, however it had been dropped to something more reasonable, long story short, went to see it, handed over money, drove it home! It was kitted out for a trip back from South Africa (shipped out in advance) around 20 years ago and has only had light use since. Fitted with ARB diff locks front and rear, sill protection bars LED spot lights (awesome but far too bright for road use), LED headlights (meh, not impressed - JS Speaker 8700, OK on dipped beam but rubbish main beam). Oh and a really impressive setup for carrying waffle boards which doubles as rear window security. Details of the trip are on a website the previous owner put together http://www.racafrica.co.uk/ which makes interesting reading. Work done so far: major service inc cambelt (only done 18k miles, but was over 18 years old ![]() Stuff on the to do list. Wire the heated seats in properly (currently plug into the cig lighter), probably swap the Aluminium plate which currently hold additional switches to the Mud dash, remove some/most of the boxing out in the back that was fitted for the overland trip (made from MDF which has swollen so the drawer jams). Find a better headlamp (opinions on this seem to be plentiful - if only they all agreed with each other!). Possibly fit the Eberspacher heater which I have in the garage. Remove the waffle board carriers (although really impressive, I can't see me ever needing them, I'm not intending to go overlanding - again will be listed on the for sale section in due course). ![]() Click image to enlarge |
