Side carrier unusable in cold weather
Has anyone had any issues with the side carrier box in cold weather? The lock itself seems super simple and cheap with no weather proofing at all. The whole mechanism freezes shut in colder weather, making it impossible to even get the key inserted. I’ve tried with the usual locking oils, etc but I’m still stuck wit a frozen lock if it’s below freezing.

I have exactly the same problem and I store my charging cable in there! Perhaps a squirt of de-icer into the lock would help.

Don't know if it will be anymore successful. But try WD40 or other water dispersal. You need to get the water out. This might do it on its own, but looking at the flag in your profile, I guess it does get cold where you are.

Once you get the water out, if the WD40 on its doesn't keep it ice free, then maybe try some spray grease or something to try and prevent water getting back in (or via condensation). Can't really think of any other options.

Silicone grease will drive water out, and help keep it out, also is sticky for the lock mech which isn’t ideal though Chillin In The Backwoods🇬🇧🇺🇸

Warm the key first with a cigarette lighter. That always works for me on padlocks, although I appreciate your cold is not the same as UK "cold". Current vehicle: 2020 Defender 110S

I have improved the situation a bit by trying to make sure the lock is completely dry and then applying some lock oil.

However, a problem that’s trickier to tackle is that anytime I wash the car, water will at the very least get into the outer parts of the lock, and then the cold eventually makes it hard to get the key inserted at all.

It’s just a very flimsy lock and I doubt it’s been tested well in cold weather conditions. Poor design.

This always made me laugh with my old Defenders. The vehicle was designed for extreme conditions and was very good in these situations. Possibly the best.

But if it was freezing you wouldn't be able to get in, as the locks/door handles would freeze up and l've had to climb in through the rear door on many occasions. And then if you got the door open the lock wouldn't latch so you couldn't close it.

The vehicle was generally so well designed for the job it was supposed to do (you'd only realise this when using one for it's intended purpose) You would think Land Rover would have fitted door handles/locks that didn't freeze up in extreme conditions.

It doesn’t get cold in the UK. Come on now stop fibbing. That’s an urban legend. Norway I can see but not the UK. 23 LBW/Urban Defender X
