Thank you, they’re sending me some photos over the weekend, particularly of the engine so I’ll put them up once I get them.
You know what it’s like, it’s been offered to me now, so all logic is slowly going out of the window!! ![]() |

Forgive the green tint, it’s in a tent/garage thing.

I think whether you pay £500 or £4000 for it, the purchase price will pail into insignificance on what the restoration costs will be.......
If it has monetary value for the seller, walk away. If it has sentimental value for them, they should sell it to you for a token cost on the grounds you will be restoring it to keep it. Best of luck Keith |

I still reckon it depends what your end goal is.
To make it really tidy & "modernise it" will just be so much work and money. However, if you don't mind it looking a little rough in some areas and want to use it for RTV, Green laning or just running about in. I suspect it could be a cheap way to get into a pre-Defender. I imagine it could be be patched up and made road legal without any major work and kept in service for another 20 years without too much hassle. Or even to just flip it for a profit. I know you said you wanted a project. But what do you really mean by this? You must have some direction and budget ideas? |

Defo a 19J there. And by the look of the breather hoses, it is a later 19J.
I put some information in this thread: https://www.defender2.net/forum/topic76287.html And a few pictures of my engine being rebuilt here too: https://www.defender2.net/forum/topic72365-210.html 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing 2012 90 CSW, 2.2TDCI, Santorini Black |

Thanks to all for the advice and comments.
I’ve offered her £500 which I think she will turn down. Apparently she paid £1800 for it a year or so ago. I’ll update you if anything happens!! ![]() |

Ay, I misunderstood it to be some a long term farm hack taking up space. £1800 is going to be hard to negotiated down from for the Owner. Good luck with your offer. A lot of sensible advice in this thread! Remember if you pay anything close to £1800 it will not be a rational but emotional decision - sometimes that's ok too as long as you know and have the money.. |

To be honest, I misunderstood her as well! I was under the impression that it was taking up space and although she knew she’d paid over the odds (well over!) she was looking to move it on.
We’re still talking but I think she’s going to advertise it now ![]() I have to be rational, I could up the offer but I don’t think I’ll get near to what she wants and then it just depletes the purse for the rebuild. I could justify spending more on something not quite so ‘in need’ to start with! “a committee is a group of people who individually can do nothing, but as a group decide nothing can be done.” |

No pictures of the chassis?
I think you will still find that the chassis is effectively beyond reasonable repair (Nothing is ever beyond repair, but is it reasonable, rational, sensible to do so?) so you need to factor in the cost of a new chassis. |

Until you are certain that the engine will not need a rebuild and the chassis will not need replacing, £500 is tops.
You can usually tell from the things you can see, how the things you cannot see have been treated. |

Still don't agree with this. You can get a rear cross member for just over £100, you can even get one with extensions and galvanised for about £260. If you can weld you can fit at home or it shouldn't cost a fortune to get someone to fit. Bulkhead looks fine in the photos. Footwells might have a few holes, but not really an issue and you can always patch up in situ. A new chassis is min of £2500 really and a whole heap more work. Plus if you are doing this, you'll want to do other things, that you just wouldn't touch if doing a rear cross member. A chassis swap is probably 15-20x more money than a cross member replacement. And doing the latter could give you a perfectly legal and usable vehicle. |

Even if the engine needs work. It could likely be made usable for mostly grunt work. Op said they wanted a project. For example: -bottom end overhaul kit = £20 -head gasket set = £17 -piston with ring = £45 -service kit & new belts = £35 Chances are if it does have issues it'll be a HG and/or a cracked piston. So long as the bore & bearings look ok, you could just slap it together with a new piston or two. Maybe less than £200 in parts. Plus probably a new exhaust £170'ish. Then if it is just a rear cross member (maybe an out rigger or so), might only need £500-1000 of welding and parts or less. And maybe another £300-500 in other parts (fuel leak, steering UJ or ball joint). Which could make it a fairly cheap runner. But it'll still be scruffy inside & out and slow. And may only need half of these things doing to get it road legal. If the op wants to go down the re-chassis route: -£2500 chassis -new footwells -new wiring loom -might as well put a disc rear axle on if doing all this -same rational, new suspension, fuel tank, bushes etc And then you have to say, why would you do all this to keep the 19j? You'd go min of Tdi which is another £1000 likely for all the bits or say a Td5, which will need a new gearbox, seatbox and transmission tunnel. So say maybe £2500 in bits. And then it is still a tatty interior, so new seats, head lining. Doors look a mess. So replacements and at this point you'll want paint too. Which is probably anywhere from £5000 to £12,000 in parts, depending on what you actually go for. And a huge amount of labour. |

I agree with Chicken, I was looking to basically tidy it up and get it running, I was expecting a bit of welding and possibly some panel replacements etc but just to have a 90 run about for fun and to tinker with, for fancy I’ve got the 2015 110xs.
Because of the early conversation I had with the seller, I was under the impression that she’d taken on something that needed more work then she realised and just wanted to move it on. Which suited me if the purchase price was right. We’ll see, she may come back to me… “a committee is a group of people who individually can do nothing, but as a group decide nothing can be done.” |
