Just got my gearbox out for a slave cylinder and clutch change. Wouldn’t be such a bad job if it wasn't for that damn DPF which is a
![]() Anyway, checked over the white nylon pivot ball at the bottom of the gear lever whilst it was out and found a fairly straight crack running down through the ball via steel spigot on one side. I don't think that the crack is supposed to be there, but it looks so straight that I’m thinking it was manufactured like that. Anyway, assuming that it isn’t, does anyone know if that lower section is available as an individual item as below or do I have to purchase the whole piece complete with aluminium housing and turret, etc as below... ![]() Click image to enlarge Here is the part I’m talking about… ![]() Click image to enlarge and the crack in the nylon ball… ![]() Click image to enlarge Thanks in advance guys. |

See this video. It shows the same cut in the ball . Generally filled with grease.

Thanks Ian. Do you know if I can get that bit separately?

It’s a whole assembly unfortunately, and the crack shouldn’t be there.
I had the same on mine, Ian is correct it should be very well greased up as well. I fitted a TMD Shift R V2 I find it really good. Though strangely, when I had a look the other day I couldn’t see them for sale now? There is a slick shift as well, but is a little different to the above. If you have a crack like that in the nylon ball as you have, it makes for a very oddball gearchange and leads to a lot of excess unwanted movement in the gearstick. I’ve not taken one apart, but noticed in the video I posted ( 10 mins in ) that the slot was cut in the same place as the OP’s picture, so are you sure it’s not meant to be there or is this a common fault with the OP’s, yours and the one in the video. ?

That does seem very coincidental Ian. I have tried squeezing the crack back together, but it doesn’t move. May be it has been made that way?? |

I’ve been doing some searching, it does look like t SHOUD NOT have that slot / split in the ball. From looking a various pictures it appears that the ball fractures as the steel parts that go through the ball expand with heat and / or corrosion.
Just my guess from what I’ve seen in pictures, so I could be completely wrong. |

I think it’s fairly common but shouldn’t happen, I guess happens over time.
What it does do is produce a waggly gearstick and very vague gearstick change. What is also a pain is the weights rattle, it will often come back even after a fix, needing fixing again. Ideally it would be best if there was one created where the weights issue is fixed permanently. I guess an all metal type might be better, but not so good to use when hot or cold in the hand. Well, I’ve decided to take the plunge and buy a Slickshift. I didn’t think it was worth buying another Land Rover one which will inevitably throw a leg out the bed at some stage. It may turn out to be awful and hard to get into gear, in which case I will have to revert back, but as they say, nothing ventured nothing gained.

Provided that the ball is not worn and is lubricated, I don't think that the crack actually makes any difference and really isn't a problem. The ball is, after all, contained in the plastic cage/cup and can't go anywhere.
I've never seen one where there is any evidence that the split ball is moving on the gear lever. |

I did SlickShift a couple of weeks ago. Top Tip: when you think there’s too much grease add some more.
Also make sure the recently added rubber ring at the top of the lever stays in place and add grease to the naked upper lever. It’s very good. You’ll be surprised and at the same time wonder what the hell didn’t LR do it in the first place. 2011 130 Utility Body 2005 110 Van |
