This is on a 2.2..
I know the glow plugs are controlled individually , and read that the power is adjusted to suit conditions.. So today I checked what they were doing.. Ambient was about 4degC and on start up with a connection to no 1 plug it was running at about 50w.. ![]() Click image to enlarge Took it for a short drive and then with the coolant around 45 deg the plugs were still active and consuming now about 26w... I noticed the power was turned off when my app indicated a coolant temp of around 50deg.. ![]() Click image to enlarge What is forgot to check was how long they would be active for if the engine wasn't started but ign was on?🤔 |

Sorry.. the 50w is just the one plug I'm checking..I'd imagine the others are similar..that was at start up on a cold day..
As I said the glow plugs are active for a good while but it looks like their power consumption drops as the coolant temp rises.. at around 40 odd degrees they were consuming about 26w per plug.. Mine switched off at about 50 deg C coolant temp... The dash light extinguishes very quickly, a second or two even on a very cold day..the plugs run on long after that goes out.. When I'm on about them timing out i mean if you switched the ignition on but don't start..I'm sure they will switch off, but i didn't check that.. |

Very interesting Andy, would be interesting to see what they do when an active regeneration is taking place.

Yes ian..I remember reading that the glow plugs had some role to play in that strategy....but in my present running order I won't be able to monitor that , 🫣🤣...
Having said that and following a conversation with someone yesterday it may not be to long till I'm returned to standard mapping and engine hardware.. at least i kept all the bits 👍😁 Unrelated but you may be able to answer.. I was mucking around with the glow plugs again and whilst a current clamp on one wire shows the current draw, as in the traces above , I thought that a clamp around the 4 wires would record the total current draw of the 4 plugs..ie dc current flowing in same direction in the 4 wires Could the fact that it's a pulsed voltage to each plug prevent the clamp from giving the correct draw??.. Work in progress as they say but if you know the answer it will save time, I'm also trying to find out if there is a timed element to glow plug operation, or is it just coolant temp based as I initially thought.? Perhaps time i looked at the wsm😫🤣 |

So I've had a look at the ws manual..🫣 and revisited the first trace when the engine was started from cold..
The plugs have a couple seconds on preheat.. ie at constant current, then they enter what the manual describes as an after glow phase.. That's the pulsed power I was rattling on about above.. And that after glow phase is dependant on coolant temp engine load and speed, but times out after 500 seconds... Should have read the manual in the first place..and if I'd studied my traces properly I'd have seen the initial pre heat phase over about 2 seconds.. it's on two separate pages on the capture, and then you can see the pulsed supply starting.. ![]() Click image to enlarge ![]() Click image to enlarge |
