2020 Defender Engine Failure
Morning,

I need some advice on behalf of my brother, he has a 2020 110 Defender which has only done 40k miles and has just been diagnosed with engine failure.

The garage (specialist) has quoted £8.5k + vat to rebuild the engine.

The red engine light came on (now yellow) with a message "Ok to drive with caution - restricted performance". Up until then the car was fine.

The garage have downloaded the codes which do not really seem to make sense.

I believe he has the 2l D240 diesel engine.

He would be gratefully for any ideas / suggestions.

Thanks,

David

There were issue with the 2.0 Ingenium. Fortunately LR soon stopped using it in the Defender.

Have a search for 2.0 Ingenium engine failures

The 2l ingenium engines are actually quite good, used in far more models in greater volume...

I know in an evoque we had a sensor failed and caused what looked like a engine failure but it was a simple thing and my sisters timing chain failed, which is a known issue - but thats older still Mike

Were there not issues with oil dilution?

There are oil dilution issues related to repeated incomplete DPF regenerations if the vehicle is used for short journeys. To reach the required temperature diesel fuel is injected into cylinder one on the exhaust stroke. The excess diesel increase the DPF temperature so regen can take place. Unfortunately some of that fuel gets past the piston and dilutes the sump oil increasing engine wear and turbo bearing wear and ultimate failure. In this scenario the turbo ingests the sump oil sending it into the engine causing a run away engine situation where the engine can rev uncontrollably until the whole lot self destructs.
As to the frequency of this happening with the Defender 2.0 diesel, I don't know, hence why I have an extended warranty just in case. 2020 Defender 110 SE 240D: Fuji White.
